I am fairly new to DPChallenge compared to some of you, but I do have a question...well I have many questions, but this one is the one that most bothers me.
I have noticed that when it comes to the themes given, it does not seem to matter to many voters if the photo actually fills the expectation of conveying an idea of the theme given. There are so very many wonderful photographs out there and I agree that usually the best ones technically are the winners, but in many circumstances they have nothing to do with the theme.
My question would be, does it even matter to follow the theme when taking a shot? |

This topic has been often discussed.
I suggest you try to look longer at some of the photos about which you have doubts, and see where the photographer may have made a connection to the challenge topic after all. Sometimes, creative and perfectly apt interpretations are not obvious at first glance.
If you want, post a couple pictures from past challenges which have this "problem" in your eyes, and maybe people can point out to you how they saw it ...

Thank you for your reply. I do not wish to put anyone on the spot as they have won fairly by majority of votes, I just do not understand the concept...that's all. Could you please tell me where I can find the other threads that discuss this issue? Thank you! Originally posted by GeneralE: This topic has been often discussed.

Antje - it's one of the mysteries of this site. I still wonder the same thing sometimes. Some of the submissions seem really "shoehorned", even though they may be technically gorgeous. All I can say is that I don't worry about what other people will do; the theme matters to me when I decide on what to shoot for it :-) |

Seasoned DPC folks will tell you that mostly it matters. Just try entering a challenge about "Drier Lint," say, with a photo of a steel and glass skyscraper, say, for a powerful demonstration. |
