The Finepix 3800 needs a lot of light for the auto focus/auto aperture to function well. This is it's most notable drawback.

Aperture control is somewhat possible by adjusting EV value. Negative EV value gives higher aperture making a darker picture. Positive EV value gets you a lower aperture allowing more light and a brighter picture.

I love the XD card and it is very good on batteries. (I use 4 NI MH rechargables) The color is very good straight out of the camera and very rarely needs more than a minor adjustment.

It is a great beginner camera. I am going to use it for at least the next 9 months until I begin thinking about taking a step or two up.

Hi Kirbic,
Thanks for the warm welcome, and thanks for the heads up on "focus confirmation". I've read that darn manual several times, but never saw anything about focus confirmation. Turned it on, and it seems to help some. Thank you.

Oh yes, this place is rather addictive. I don't know how many hours I've spent browsing late into the night!

Low light situations are a pain, sometimes, with most cameras. I have one of those tiny little thumblights to shine on the subject if I have the time for set up etc.
Bad thing about focus confirmation...bright light! Hard to distinguish it sometimes. I use Manual focusing alot, and go by my eye, and if I can see the "sharpening"" with the focusing confirm.
My beefs...slow RAW writing to the card. Bought a bigger card, so I could start shooting RAW more often, just hate waiting. Anything that is a quick shot...jpeg fine setting (always on with the aperture priority in the bag, in case). Also, shooting bright daylight or at something bright or white in Manual, can't see the exposure bar at the bottom. Also, the biggest one I learned a few weeks ago when I went to spread some of the ashes of my dog in RMNP...DO NOT LET THE COMPUTER DOWNLOAD YOUR RAW FILES THROUGH ANY SOFTWARE PROGRAM. Download them manually through the Mass Storage setting. At least I am going to from now on. Left my RAWs with only a thumnail. )C:
I'll think of some more. LOL Really, I love this camera (IR is cool on it too), just want a DSLR.

karmat - the WWll naval gunfire procedure was "One over, One under, One on". Try a burst of three different exposures on a subject to see if you get a good one.

I miss the spot metering option that my minolta 7i had, I think the 300 has a similar AEL but it does not work in same way, (hangs haed sheepishly, knowing the affection most have for the canons : ) ).

- moiré turns up a bit too much too my liking
- the jpeg compression is too agressive. The alghoritm of the S602Z is fixed on file size, not on a compression ratio. As soon as you've got a lot of detail (nature) this acts up.
- too agressive sharpening in normal mode
- no noise reduction in A and S, only in M
- no TTL flash communication
- the EVF has too much lag in 5 frames per second mode, makes it very hard to pan a subject
- too much shutter lag
(with everything else it is fast, so there are good things)
- In manual the exposure indicator lacks an EV scale what makes it harder to determine how much exposure compensation you give compare to the exposure meter
- no histograms in 5fps postview
- EVF makes it hard to check the focus lock, not detailed enough
- There is no way to have both a clear EVF and the last shot on the LCD. Sometimes I would like to have the EVF free for a next opportunity and the chance to check the previous photo on the LCD
- bad battery status indicator
- lens lacks sharpness at wideangle and telezoom, F2.8-F3.6 and F8-F11.

But overall I am happy with it.

You forgot to mention no bloody AF illuminator, I hate taking picture in low light I have to carry a torch with me to get the thing to focus!

the thing I hate the most abput my coolpix 4500 is how sluggish and defective the autofocus is. Most of the times it fails to focus subjects in interiors during daytime. if there is not enough contrast, it may even fail during daytime in the open. Is that why Nikon has stopped marketing that model. in the beginning i thought it was just me, not mastering the technology etc. etc., but now I am frustratedly convinced: IT IS THE CAMERA! Anyone else agrees?

D100

- I hate dust on my CCD sensor, and not being able to clean it w/out purchasing the pricey power adapter.

- And in general, I'd like digial images to have more dynamic range.

in response to Beagle boy, ur mad about 3 sec? my fuji s5000 is stuck with 2 sec! and its purple edge line is enhanced with the 2x sony tele conversion so I could not get any quality shots from it. its also got a lot of noise at iso200. im considering a eos300d some time next year when i get the doh.

Not having the 10x preview zoom like what was added to the 10D. But it's not quite enough of a killer feature to trade in a D60 for...

I am VERY interested to see what the next Digital SLR from Canon in the D60/10D/300D line will be.

Only two things wrong with my Minolta.

1:) Autofocus is WAY to slow.

2:) Battery indicator doesn't come on 'til it's almost too late.

Otherwise I LOVE it.

Memory card gets a little warm too, but I'm told this is a FEATURE, not a defect. ;)

Low-light auto-focus is an impossibility.

There's an occasional strange 'softness' to images from the 5400 - I'm at a loss to explain it, and have seen it mentioned in reviews. It seems to creep up onyou sometimes and is very confusing (and happens at most focal lengths, though not when the focus is locked manually), and most shutter speeds (it isn't shake - I have 1/4,000 shots taken at full wide-angle on a tripod that suffer from this).

No display of focal length when manual-focussing (manual focus is the only real reason I would move to a DSLR).

Noisy at higher ISO's (but it doesn at least start at 50).

Hologram autofocus is terrible with filters attached! I might be upgrading to the F828 soon. Atleast the hologram autofocus is where it won't get obstructed. Then again, new camera and a new set of problems. The purple fringing of the F828 seems to be my biggest drawback. And yep, memory sticks.. i have over 7 already and if i change camera brands, they're useless!

i can make you a sticker ;) ...

but seriously, i prefer the 10D to the 1D. the higher res gets me jobs i couldnt get with the 1D. It also, imo, takes smoother cleaner pics.

my only beef with it is the auto white balance under artifical lighting is a bit crap. but RAW helps with that, so ..

No beefs at all!

My Kodak DX4900 has a 16 sec max shutter speed which is great for a very basic point and shoot, but it has some noise sometimes. My Minolta Dimage 7i only has a max of 4 seconds!!!! What's up with that? And as far as the 300D goes, the only problem is that you dont have the option to shoot in black and white, sepia, etc but I found out that's just how it is with DSLRs....I think. Other than that, I love all my cameras. They are all great in their own way.

1- Max shutter speed of 2 sec
2- Min ISO 200, no ISO 100
3- Manual Focus feature is really hard to manage....
03/31/2004 08:49:30 AM · #69
Can I have two ?

Lack of focus points - only 3 and all in the horizontal plane.

When you turn it to do portrait shots you can't focus to the left or right - makes action shots with decent composition harder than it might be.

1.6x multipler - means that decent wide angle is almost impossible. a 17-40 ends up as a standard zoom range.
03/31/2004 09:00:13 AM · #70
hmmmm let's see, I've only had it a month or so, but....I wish I could use a standard cable release, that it was full frame and that the pop-up flash was replaced with a bigger, brighter finder.

Yes, these are nit-picky, but that's about all I can come up with. Seriously, the 10D is a wonderful tool, and I'm really happy with it.

Oh yeah, one more beef: I wish I had more time to shoot with it.

I'm really curious to see what will happen when the next successor to the D60/10D/300D line comes out. I already know I can't afford (or at least justify) plunking down the $$$ for the 1D MKII, so it is down to a wait-and-see thing. Might be a long wait though.

Mainly I am wondering what they will do with the sensor and the multiplier.

your 7i will take a shot up to 30 seconds in bulb mode, which is part of manual mode. look up bulb mode in your manual.

this shot was taken w/ the 7i at 30 seconds....

No B&W setting.
No bulb setting.
No place to buy the accessories besides mail order. Can't "touch" them first.
Would love the lens to be faster.

All minor, I really like the camera.

It is a F2 (wide angle) to F2.4 (tele) lens ? Very few lenses are faster than that, especially zoom lenses. I personally think it is one of the strong points of the F7x7. Especially if you consider my biggest beef.

Mine biggest beef is the noise, at higher ISO not really acceptable. Would be my main reason to switch to 10D/300D or D70.

The only real complaint I have about my Digital Rebel is that I can̢۪t manually select Ai-Servo mode in Av mode. If I could do that one thing it would fix 99% of my dissatisfaction with the camera (I am actually very satisfied with the camera even with that limitation).
