In doing shoots for people, I've found that the zoom lenses can't touch the fixed length for quality. I've had some wonderful shots with zoom, but the fixed length has been spectacular. For inside shots, I got the 50mm 1.4 (canon) and I'm liking it very much. I had the 85mm portrait lens originally, but that was for my analog camera, and I had to step down to 50mm because of the whole multiplying focal length by 1.6 deal with digital.
I actually like using my 100mm 2.8 macro for shoots as well. It's only 2.8, but that's better than the zooms 4.5! |

I'm not sold on primes myself. I always seem to have the wrong one on the camera to get the framing I need and since weddings are fast paced and can't really be stopped for the photog's convenience, I prefer zooms.
I do have the 50 1.2 for portraits and use it a good bit, but my other primes? Prolly not been used in 6 or 8 months. But that's me.
I think 2.8 or faster matters for focus, low light and bokeh issues.
If it's an outdoor wedding then perhaps an 18-200 would be a cool tool to have.

Would be cool if shitty IQ is the goal. Here's the review on the Canon 18-200mm. The really, really, really bad Sigma kit lens is even better.

Don't know.
The one and only time I sublet a wedding out a guy shot it with Nikon gear and their 18-200 lens, inside a dark church and some outside shots. It was not his first wedding.
The worst pictures I'd ever seen - wedding or even snapshots from when I was a kid with an old Instamatic even.
I had the 28-135 and I liked that lens, but it's too slow (ap wise) for what I need to do. I've thought about the 18-200 just about the time I think about vacations - one lens instead of 3 or 4 would mean less baggage and less "honey, are you done taking pictures yet?" from the wife as i'd not be swapping lenses or trying different things.
