1)if you had to keep only 1 from your lenses which one would you prefer?

2)if you had to throw away 1 of your lenses which one would you spare?

1) my 50mm f/1.4. Beautiful bokeh, an excellent portrait lens.

2) 300mm f/4.5. too long for my uses. I've never used it for anything real, I think...

1. It would have to be the lensbaby composer, its a complete lens system!

2. I'd not throw away any lens but would be grateful for bids on either my 300/F2.8 or 100-400 IS USM L

1) Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC - Great lens, sharp and cheap. It's the one I use the most

2)Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III - cheap and not very good ! To be fair I have taken a few pretty decent photos with this but they are the exception. I cant remember the last time I used it.

1) Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

2) Quantaray AF 70-210mm f/4.5-5.6 High-Speed for Canon (Never use it... EVER)

1) Sigma 10-20
2) Nikon 70-300 4-5.6G This lens has taken about four good photos since I got it. I have been trying my hand at longer zoom shots and its a waste of time, even if it is zoomed to less than 200 mm. Bleh, Of course I may use it later today, lol!

1) is tough.. either 85/1.4 or 70-180micro
2) got rid of the real dogs .. but i'd dump the 50/1.8 sure it's sharp but i never use it ...

1) Tamron 24-75 f/2.8. Not too long, not too short, nice and light. It's the lens that's useful in the most situations.
2) Tokina 12-24. I guess I just don't see the world in wide angle. I almost never use this lens, and when I do, the images look like crap. No fault of the lens, however, it's a great lens.

1. either Tammy 28-75 or 100mm Macro
2. 50 1.8 ... just don't use it much ...

Why not just ask for offers for these lenses as they are admittedly "dogs" in your hands. Wish this discussion would have happened when I was bulking up my inventory. This can be like a garage sale.

1) Sigma 10-20mm
2) Nikkor 18-135mm -- it's not bad, I just wouldn't miss it as much as everything else
01/20/2009 06:32:44 PM · #12
1) Mamiya 1.9/80 <--My new love!
or as a second choice, my good old solid and darn sharp nikkor 85 1.8

2) Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO DG
rarely using it for either my film repro's or as a spyglass when my normal glasses are too weak. LOL
but it's my only long tele lens and got it for like 140 bucks off of ebay so what the heck.

1) Sigma 10-20mm - seems to be a popular lens.
2) Sigma 70-300mm - not too bad, but this is the one I use least because of lack of wide angle (and no stabiliser). As I usually go out with only one lens, this one just doesn't seem useful most of the time.

So, to summarize....

1) The Sigma 10-20 has a real fan club.

2) Cheap telephoto zooms don't.

ill have all the lenses that everyone doesn't want :)

I would actually keep my "cheap" telephoto lens, it has worked great and takes nice crisp photos. Granted, it takes some getting used to to hold it steady, but it has really helped me in getting close to some cool waterfowl.

But my kit lens, which is also darn good, is good for closeups, so I am not sure which one I would get rid of, but it would probably be the little guy.

1. I'd keep the Sigma 70-200mm... wonderful all round lens (unless you're shooting things that are close to you... and large).

2. I'd have to throw out that 35-70mm... damn it, no one will even take it... I can't pay someone to take it away!

1) 85 f1.8 although it would be tough to throw out the 70-200f4 and the 10-22 but would do it to keep the 85.

2) 50 f1.4... Yup you read that right.... Ever since I got it, I have been so so on it. I don't use it much and will possibly swap with a 28 or 30 fast prime instead... or maybe the 135 that I really want (have to get the 6 numbers in the lottery this week first though).

1.) I'd keep my Canon 28-135 IS - I love the lens and the photos are sharp!

2.) I'd toss my Tamron 19-35; it's cheap and it shows, but it does fill the range I need.

More often than not I'm reaching for the 90mm macro so that's the keeper. The next choices to keep would be the 100-400 and the 10-22, not necessarily in that order. The throw away is easy, the 70-210 f4.
01/20/2009 09:11:09 PM · #23
If I only had one lens, it would be tough between my three favorite lens. THe 85 F1.8, the 135F2, and the 70-200 F2.8.

The one I'd toss out and use very rarely..........24-70 or 105F2.8

I see that most of the group in this thread do not use their long zooms or 300mm and up lenses. I feel that this has a lot to do with the need for great light or good stability in order to get sharp shots with them. You have to be shooting at 1/1000 or faster to hand hold sharp shots with a 300, unless you get lucky. A lot of my critter shots are shot with an old manual 300 4.5, but I use a monopod most of the time with it.

That said, I feel that the lens that I like best of the bunch is an old Nikkor 85 1.8 H C Ai manual lens. I love the "right" feel of it on my heavy Fuji S3, and that it is the right one for people head shots at a comfortable distance.

The one that I would let go of would be the first tele that I bought, a Nikkor 70-300 G. It shot a lot of good photos for me, but I have a couple of 300 4.5's and a 70-300 D ED which covers that range. I keep the G for a loaner lens.

To add a 3rd question to this list, what lens would I like to have next? It would be a good wide zoom, the 10-20 would likely be first choice. I would use it for landscapes in the swamps, and for sailing adventure shots, and maybe an occasional close up of a gator or two.

1) 24-105mm F4 L Such a range, very versatile.

2) 18-50mm F2.8 Sigma EX I have the 24 in the lens above and I also have a 50mm F1.8, so I think I could spare this one most.
