Here more info on the Wacom Graphire 3.

Easier to edit your picture by using a pen instead of the mouse. You can use it to draw just like a real pen. The harder you push down the heavier or thick the line. Helps with detailed work.

Pretty cool! Kinda expensive though.

These are great, and are especially useful for fine touch-ups and masking. In addition they are far more ergonomic than a mouse -- save yourself wrist, elbow, and shoulder problems and get one. I have two tablets (almost 10 years old), but they only work on Macs, so I might even get one myself.

How much ink do you get? And what colours?

Sorry guys just joking. I personally use an Intuos and do not rate the graphire in comparison.

It does however look like a very good deal.

I think you'll be fine with PS 6/W98. For what you are doing (masking and minor touch-up), I don't think you need to spend extra on the Intuos models; the Graphire should be fine. As always, it really depends on your budget and priorities. If you want to use it for artwork creation, painting, etc. then the more expensive/larger model might be worth it. Or, if you can still get one for $49, get that to try and buy a better one if your decide you need it.

Gordon also recently posted in another thread about using Channels to create masks, thereby mostly avoiding the need for drawing/painting them at all. You might search the forums for that as well.

I've never used any tablet myself except for an old (1996) Wacom 4x5 tablet, so I can't really comment on the larger tablets -- I'm guessing they'd be even cooler -- but still highly recommend them, for the ergonomic advantage if nothing else. The Graphire used to come bundled with Painter -- a program with some of the most "naturalistic" painting brushes and filters -- for a real extra bonus.

I think they started at $99, so that is still good. I think I paid about $129 in 1996 dollars ... but they still work.
