You mean, you want to enter it FROM the portfolio or workshop because it's not handy on your hard drive? Remember you need to be able to locate the original on this shot, right? Assuming you have that covered, just right-click on the image when it is displayed and download it to your desktop, then you can enter it from the desktop.

You will have to have two copies then. Your portfolio copy, and then the new Challenge version.

You can quote them on the portfolio image, then copy, the quote+code, then go to the challenge image after voting, make a new post, and paste the quotes in to preserve them. That work for you?

Oh, hey, that's a good idea too.

What could reasonably be considered a high number of views or comments?

Don't worry. This risk is quite overstated. Enter it.

I second what he said. Don't worry about it. Enter your best shot.

As it happens, I kept my entry-to-be from the public eye for several months, but that's just because as soon as I shot it I knew where it was going. I didn't even enter it in the best-of-month FS because I was saving it for best-of-08. But I have entered previously-shown images before, and I have seen ribbons go to previously-shown images, so....

The simple fact of the matter is MOST DPC challenge entrants don't read the forums regularly anyway...

Hypothetical - let's say one of my favorite shots of the year ("best" is relative) has 350 views, 30 comments, and 7 favs... too much?

Thanks Dr Achoo and Bear_Music - I really don't think it was seen by that many. I had it in a side challenge but have since removed it from the forum thread and moved it to my Workshop. It was a picture I had taken before I joined DPC and didn't realize I could enter into a Best of 2008!

The picture that I entered for "Best of 2006" had about this amount of views and favs... and it finished 24 out of 705 pictures.

And I know exactly what picture that is without looking - mine is nowhere NEAR that good. That, simply, is an awesome picture. :-)

If your shot has more views than this one, you have too many and should not enter it in Best of 2008:

Holy Crap! How did you manage that? I'm lucky if mine break a couple hundred - then again I have only entered 4 challenges and am very, very new at this and don't have the polish your shots do.

Perhaps maybe he's posted it in a few hundred threads showing people how many views it has, and thusly gets a thousand more views everytime? ;) (I'm not saying you have!) Then, when it's got so many, it shows up on the "most viewed" list and people view it more there, and it's a rolling-stone thing.

I think the photo shows up on the front page when you Google "Bloody Mary". At least that's where Langdon seemed to think the hits were coming from. I certainly am not tickled it is my top viewed photo by 160,000 views... ;)

Hmm, well, now it's not there. Why does Google sometimes have images on the front page and sometimes not? They seem to change from time to time. A mystery.

Shows up in the top row if you Google and specify "images"...

Ya, I noticed that, but I've also seen it at the top of the regular page. Sometimes they seem to "feature" images on the main page as well. Not at this moment though.

My entry is "in". It was a photo which didn't fit any challenges at the time and was forgotten at the time of the monthly FS. Oh, it won't score well. It's one of those images which didn't need PP straight out of the camera. While I did somewhat improve minor characteristics of the image, it would easily meet "basic" rules. This will be to the detriment of the score, as some voters discriminate against realism. Doesn't matter! After a lot of thought, the image I submitted was my best capture of 2008. It's better to be lucky, than good.

Welllll, you got me curious Richard :) Seein' as how the area you live in is the love of my life and favorite photographic place on the planet, I am dying to see what you came up with as your BEST of the entire year. It must be reeeeally good!

Edit: oooops. . .can't type today :(

A quick question. Does your entry need to be something that you shot in 2008 and put in your portfolio? Or can it be an image that you took in 2008 and didn't put in your portfolio ( I have tons of these)?

Ya'll don't see the number of requests for dq we get for it. I just want people to be aware that IF they enter something that has been seen, there WILL be people vote it down. It is not a rule, just a recommendation.
