I would like a mentor also. Have been taking photographs for awhile but need help with PhotoShop and the more technical side of picture taking. At present I have no IM mechanism but will download one for this purpose. I have my photos at www.pbase.com/sonnyh
Any help would be great.

Note - You have a $1200 camera and you need a mentor? Sounds like you bought more camera than you can handle, or you need one hell of a mentor... Methinks that's a lot of camera... more than I could handle.

Good luck! - Bob

Okay, I'll mentor you Gordon. It'd be like John Daly mentoring Tiger Woods. Anything I could possibly teach you, you already know better :) I'm not volunteering for that one. My person to mentor would have to ask, what does DOF stand for?

You're a Dork Gordon, but I still admire your work.

I'm not sure what the camera has to do with needing a mentor. I have 10D and can handle the basic technical aspects of the camera and photography in general. Unfortunately my photographic vision and creativity has been damaged by 14 years of corporate work. It will take mentoring/counseling to get the other side of my brain working again.

I think if I had the formula for how to learn acute photographic vision, I'd be a millionaire. I don't know how to get that... If I did, I bet I'd be a trite (or a ton, depending on your current opinions of my work) more successful on DPC, and in my other photographic pursuits. My personal opinion is you need to go shoot more. I'd say you have to retrain your mind to see what you once did. We can't tell what that is, only you know. If you have any kind of archives, dig thru them and try to see what you did. Get the book called "Learning to See Creatively" by Bryan Peterson (I think that's who its by). That may help you.

I attribute the remark regarding the camera to some relationship between the skill of the photographer and the complexity of the camera. I can't imagine myself owning a camera that cost over $1000. Maybe its just stereotyping... Good photographer = good camera. But I imagine if there are good photographers struggling with not-so-good cameras, the opposite must also be true.

I'm definitely not the authority here. It just struck me a little odd, that's all. I'm not trying to stir up trouble here, but it seems a bit late to be saying that now.

An aside - I got an email from Bryan yesterday - he is about to have an updated version of this book released, in the next couple of weeks with a load of new photographs and content. I'd recommend holding off on buying this until you can get the 2003 version.

No trouble here... I was just looking for some discussion. I like shooting candids and the response, focus and shutter, was driving me nuts, so I bought the 10D. I know there are far better photographers working with much less camera.... but boy do I love hearing that click when I press the button.

Thanks for the book recommendation....

Now I see where you might have got some of those. I myself liked Dept. Of (the) Future from Sweden.

Yup, it isn't like I came up with them myself. Dept of the Future sounded like a Huxley term to me.

I think you mean George Orwell. I read them about the same time and get them confused too.

The cost of the camera, aside from being able to make a technically accurate exposure, is largely irrelevant the quality of the end product. I have seen incredible images made with pinhole cameras that were fabricated from pennies with of materials. I have also seen photographers with thousands of dollars of equipment produce absolute crap over and over. It's not the tool, it's the operator.

Nope, I meant Huxley. Everyone says anything spooky about the future sounds Orwellian, but it sounds more like a brave new world term than from 1984. Orwell didn't exactly consider the future much at all, in the book everything happens now. There is no history, there is no future. We are always at war, it is always the same enemy, even though it changes all the time.

Hmmm ... good points! Although, by your interpretation it could still be from 1984 since in Newspeak, Dept. of the Future would have nothing to do with any actual future, as you point out.

Yup, but when I said Huxley, I meant Huxley....

Maybe Dept of Doubleplusgood present would be more Orwellian. I think the idea of the word 'Future' would probably be the anthesis of the world in 1984, because if there was a future, people would want change - so the word would no doubt dissappear into newspeak.

OK, I know it's been a while since I've been a frequent visitor to the forums but I totally forgot about the mentor issue. What ever happened with this? Did interest just taper off and everyone forgot? I know it's the holidays and all but I was just wondering. Thanks!

Rob the Swash or "Rob York" started this and is giving it up (process of pairing em up) but since I was interested in gaining a mentor and also I am a stay at home mom and might have time on my hands to keep it going he sent me some info to get started! Maybe a new thread is needed cause there seems to be a lot of interest! I am still a newbie at DPC but have a good idea of pairing the mentor and mentees! Only I think we need more volunteers for the mentee part! Here is some info He also sent to help get started if anyone wants to help me sort this all out!

I would like to be considered....I certaintly can use a mentor. Sometimes I feel like I have an " eye" for photos, but not the skills to create what I want or how I want the completed photo to look. I uploaded some photos to my portfolio, but I'm not sure how to link to them in this forum. I see from the responses to your question you have a long list of talented interested people, and whoever gets to mentor with you will be a lucky individual...indeed!
12/19/2003 09:11:50 PM · #100
So how is it decided who is "good enough" to mentor and who needs help as a student? There are plenty of folks I'm sure who know less about photography than I do, but there is also an awful lot I need to learn- as I'm sure is the case with most folks. Can we have advanced shooters helping intermediate shooters who are helping beginners??
