HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE - HOPE YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL 2009

I looked around for a "post pictures" thread for the Shutter Priority January side challenge, but didn't manage to find one. If I missed it, I'll move this first attempt to the proper thread...

day one...

Yep, I missed it, so here's my "Day One" in its proper place.

Here's a question - when I want to use shutter speed to achieve an effect, I tend to go full manual. Does that still count? Or do I have to set it to Tv for it to count? :-)

I also go over to full manual when I want to control my shutter speed. I don't think I've ever used shutter priority on my camera, only aperture priority for more general shots and full manual for control.

99% of my pics are shot in shutter mode. Don't ask me why, I've just gotten used to it and I keep doing it. Probably the wrong thing to do huh?

Hey, if ain't broke, don't fix it! :-) You seem to do just fine, whatever it is you're doing, so stick with it!

You are aloud to use fully manual... Only rule is that the shutter must be in extreme... For example REALLY fast or REALLY slow!

My first entry...

This is not a good picture and you do not need to make comments on it. Camera on manual, f/7.1, ISO 400, shutter speed 1/10 sec. Object is to move the camera - here I went from right to left and happened to catch someone moving that direction at the time. As I said, it's certainly not a good photo, but might give you an idea of something to try with shutter speed as your driving factor.

I also shot a bunch of candids at Tv, shutter speed priority, with the shutter set to 1/200 and my 100mm lens. The objective was to shoot fast enough to keep camera motion from being a factor, which I do run into with that lens. I did get some decent results clarity wise (ie crisp focus, limited camera movement) but had one shot that the camera totally misread. I was shooting back toward the sun and it WAY overexposed the shot. Not sure what happened there. Actually, the more I look at it, the more I think it's full frame lens flare. At any rate, just for educational purposes, here's the original and a quick edit. Shows there's a lot to be found in a RAW file, yes? Again, comments are not required. I'm looking at all of this as a learning experience and thinking out loud. :-)

Here are my first. I've used tv a lot for panning so I want to try different things :)

My second entry.

Really fast or really slow? Understand the idea of getting an effect, but I was also looking at this as an exercise in changing my normal aperture priority habit. As well, when I shoot with my p & s, which I still like to do, the extremes are limited. And you can get similar effects without extremes. Still plan to try this with the extremes in mind; so far changing my habit has been extremely frustrating!
