Why complain if you "only" get a score of 5?
A 5 is NOT an average image. It is well above average.
The general quality of images submitted to DPC challenges is high and a score of 5 is indicative of that.
A score of 5 is very good, a score of 6 is outstanding with most images worthy of publication and a score above 7 is exceptional.
Personally, I have submitted images I spent many hours on that scored below 4 and have had images I spent far less effort on finish above 6.
A challenge and voting only lasts a week, but the image lasts forever.
Evaluate your pictures independent of the challenge. If it is strong enough to stand on its own then chances are good it will outlive a lowly 4 it might score during a given week.
Strive for excellence and you will rarely go wrong. (See jjbeguin)

These days I wish I could get a score of at least 5. :-|

Because the scale is from 1-10, 5 being about in the middle, that is considered the median, or average.
So, yes, getting a 5 means to me "average", "nothing unusual", "needs lots of work"

I agree with KarenB, 5 is completely average or at least should be looked at that way. Doesn't make much sense to glorify it. |

A 5 is a very good score if all you get are 4's, but a 4 is a good score to those still in the 3's. A 6 is a very good score if all you get are 5's, an outstanding score if all you get are 4's. A 7 is still a very good score as I dont think there are many who continually earn 7's week after week.
There are some, myself included, who try to aim for above their total average score. Mine is currently 5.9 and so I would need to score above that in order to feel like I have done good or improved. Therefore a 5.5 to me is a blah average score, and yet a 5.5 to someone who has an average of 4.6 would be great.
Scores are relative and only mean as much as you want them to mean.

Precisely how I feel. I've come to the conclusion within myself that the reason I'm here is not to "win" a ribbon in a challenge, but to learn to be a better photographer for myself. If I took a photograph that was judged all around to be a nearly perfect "10" but am not happy with it myself, I don't want the ribbon! Conversely, if *I* am happy with it, then it shouldn't really matter what anyone else thinks. |

Numbers tell fascinating stories...
KarenB:
Based on her statement you might think KarenB disagrees with my original post about 5 being "good". However, her average vote cast is 6.4 which means she thinks the average image submitted to DPC is high quality. That is in complete agreement with her statement and my original assessment. I just assign a lower number.
TechnoSchroom:
Claims to agree with KarenB but 4.3 is their average vote cast. If 5 is "average" to TechnoSchroom then they are saying the average DPC image is poor quality. I think KarenB and I disagree with that.
Moodville:
She is the most perceptive of all when she says, "Scores are relative and only mean as much as you want them to mean." She considers success when she beats her own average image score.
Moodville and I give DPC images about the same score, around 5.2. We are close to being "average" voters. KarenB is a more generous voter and Technoschroom a less generous voter.
What is fascinating about Moodville is the average vote on her images is almost 6. That means, by comparison with her own voting record, she sets a very high standard and only competes against herself.
She lives what others dream...

5.0 actually seems to be a below average challenge score... check here for why:
//www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_history.php
The average score in any given challenge seems to be above 5.0.

Now, my question is what is the difference between the "average" and the "midrange" scores? |

John,
You are right. Looks like they average in the low 5s. There are some challenges in the high "5"s...
Get it? The images in challenges that people like a lot get "High 5s". :)
I still contend that in general images submitted to DPC are way above average pictures whether it is scored a 5 or not and that you should not be seriously disappointed to get a score in the low 5s.

Personally, for me, saying that I got an everage score of 5 would be an honor to me, seeing that I am just a little below average and competing with some amazing talent out there. Being among the average is saying a lot here for some of us. But, I must say that striving for your best and learning something new every time is what it is all about. Plus, we do this because we all love photography anyways, scores asre just numbers. Sometimes they agree and match what we think, and most of the time they don't. Such is life. |

Average is the average score of all the entries (i.e., sum all scores then divide by total number of entries). The mid-range score is the average of just the highest and lowest score (Highest + Lowest)/2. |

I must say that I agree with Karen and Moodville.
A five on a scale of one through ten is actually below average. 5.5 would be average.
When I vote, that is how I think of the number. When I receive a five I feel that it is below average.
I too look at my own average. I strive for a score above it.

If you consider the worst and best scores for each challenge the real average is more like 3-4. (7 being a winner and 2 being a looser)
I have never seen 8's,9's or 10's for a final average, and also never seen a final average of 1.
Anyway back to your question:

Me? I think 5 sucks, I hate getting 5-point-somethings. I like 6's though ;) and a 7 would be great!

I feel the same as a few of you. I only care that I beat my previous score, and learn from my mistakes. The comments are very welcome, no matter how bad or good they are. It helps me learn how to be a better photographer. This is sooooooooo much less expensive than paying for college courses on photography, and you get to learn by doing! I thank each person that gives me a low score when the photo deserves it. I soak that in and learn not to make the same mistakes again..and to spend more thought on the photo instead of just jumping in there and snapping away. By the way...I have started taking photos of models as a learning experience. I took about 140 photos yesterday..and posted some to a website..hope to get some feedback on their quality. Was the first time for the model and myself to do this sort of thing.

I consider everything under 5 a low grade, not because of some avarage something, simply because I know I can do better. |

I give a 5 to a large bulk of images which meet the challenge somehow, which look o.k., which have no major technical flaws, but which leave me completely indifferent.
Very often obvious pictures of obvious subjects, which don't leave a mark. Sometimes pictures which have something special, and get extra marks for that, but then on the other hand also have clear flaws, and get rated down to 5 again. |
