I gave him an 8
So he made 6.4229 x 175 = 1124 point from 175 votes.

If I had given him a 7

He would have made (1123) points divided by the number of votes (175) = 6.412

Then I would have been 3rd place with my 6.4211 score.

But I feel better and I'm happy being fair to the way I vote.

Good on ya for being fair.

I don't vote on a challenge I'm in to avoid this dilemma.

Being fair must be tough for some. Of the top three, I had the most votes under 3. If someone takes the time to set up a shot and not point and shoot, the deserve a 5 for at least trying. After that, it can sway either way. Maybe I'm just jaded a little.

IMO...you need to learn how to throw around a few more 1's and you'd be a lot happier (than you are now). Kidding, of course...I think?

Congrats on a high finish. Nice shot.

No disrespect intended, but how on earth can you be jaded?

You've entered two challenges and voted a couple for 600 votes.

The 3, 2, & 1 vote thing has been discussed to death, and it's just the nature of some people that they vote that way......don't let it bother you, it's not going to change.

You've got a pretty darn good track record all things considered......relax and enjoy!

Oh.....and congrats on your blue......some of us have well over 100 challenges under our belts and haven't seen a blue.

I "point and shoot". How would you rate my work, keeping in mind I (almost) never set up a shot. In fact, to a certain degree I kinda frown on it...in some cases. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of created scenes.

No need to answer but perhaps worth some consideration.

LOL! It happens! BUT... what if he gave you an 8 instead of a 7 and that's why you'd get third? What if he's thinking the way you're thinking? What if you gave him a 7 and he gave you a 7?

*grin*

It's all life here in the big city.

Congrats on your 4th place HM! Well done.

For what its worth I gave him a 7 and you an 8, I'd say its a wash and I helped you get fourth. :D

Don't worry about the votes of 3 and below, it's the nature of the beast. In fact I'm glad to see that 2 nude shots ribbonned 1st and 2nd in a NON-nude challenge. That must be a first for DPC! Or a sign of CHANGE for the better among members! :)

okay, i should clear some things up. by point and shoot, I didn't mean to take anything away from photojournalism, that's how I shot for 4 years. It wasn't until I worked at a studio that I understood to importance in the ability to manipulate light and object. I'm just saying, it's good to be well rounded. and as for the 'jaded" comment, I've always held myself to the highest and most of the time unrealistic standards, and do get let down when I don't beat personal goals and yes I am new to DPC as a contender, but that isn't to say I haven't lurked in the shadows for a long time. I get the idea of how things are done around here.

Regardless who voted what I think IMO the ranking is fair:

Your picture is a bit of a shoehorn for me. The challenge was to take a picture of something you want for Christmas while I interpret your picture to be dry desert - not exactly what you wanted. But... I don't pay too much attention to that anyway.

While your picture is pretty and have nice colors I feel that the 3rd place college kid pic gives me a lot more. It tells a story and while it wasn't a picture of what the photographer wanted for Christmas either, it was instantly clear to me what he (or the kid) wanted for Christmas.

My taste might be weird to most but the 4th place picture would be something I would like to see in a kitchen calendar for the month of August while 3rd place would be a framed 11 x 8 1/2 and on the wall in a jazzy coffee shop (I know - I'm weird!). They are both nice, but in different ways.

Just my personal opinion :)

So if you've been a lurker then you should probably know that nudes or implied nudes tend to get more of those lower votes than other subjects in general. It's probably not fair. However, you did get a lot of 10s as well. Were those fair? For me the photo is shot competently enough that it shouldn't have gotten a 1 but it was by no means a 10 either. I probably would have given it a 6 had I voted. The gift-wrapped nude is such an overdone concept that it requires more than just showing us that you can light it professionally. Now that's usually enough to win a ribbon around here and is why you did win it but to impress those who have a more sophisticated palette it requires far more than that. What would have made this a stronger photograph is more fire and passion from your model but that's not her fault, it's yours. She's very pretty so by default she'll give you enough sex appeal out of the box but you didn't do enough to get the passion out of her. Anyway, just my opinion. Maybe that might shed a little light on some of the less than perfect votes.
