There was an expert editing side challenge back in October and it was great fun. Check out what people did in there and see if you would want to set up another. I would be in one again so long as there are no post every day requirements.

I am just wondering....your picture got disqualified because you did not submit the original within 48 hours of being prompted to, not because of the editing you did.
And secondly, why add a category for advanced editing, just take the picture and don't worry about how much you can edit it, I feel if we all did that, we would come out with some really great pictures, instead of overedited pictures that look like they come from a fantasy world. |

I think that's a good idea. I hate having to compete with people who are excellent at photoshop and are able to make their pictures stand out among those that are minimally edited. I think it would be great for those who enjoy PP'ing pictures to have their own challenge and be able to compete in that respect. |

A fabulous idea, I'm all for it. Love your portfolio (I want to be you when I grow up), but I think a regular expert editing challenge will never happen here. |

I think 6 per year is a good level for Expert Editing... |

I support an anything goes deal for a challenge or two. I don't enter because almost everything I do would be disqualified. But those photos are who I am and I can't dumb them down to fit challenges. If I do they suck, and then people tell me they suck, and then I take it personal and start thinking that I suck, and then I just sit in my room and cry myself to sleep on my giant pilla. |

from the comments I was receiving i.e. 'motion blur will get you DQ' I knew I wasn't within the rules... hence why I didn't bother to submit the original. |

Shetland, I thought both of your DQs were fabulous images and I agree that there should be an outlet within DPC for such work to be acknowledged. If I can get a warm glow from ribboning for a shot that took me just a couple of hours to shoot and PP, then images like yours which must take far longer should be able to receive scored recognition.
However, the main reason I'd like to see expert editing a regular feature is that I'd like to get better at this. Competing in the basic and advanced editing categories has really honed my tolerances for composition, focus, noise and lighting; I know that being able to compete in expert editing challenges would catalyse my adoption of these techniques. For me 'community' and 'learning' are the very things that make this site so enjoyable and I think the addition of regular expert challenges could only help expand our community and promote further learning opportunities. I do think they should be themed though.

Ok, going to create a 'Expert side challenge' for all those showing interest in both joining in and spectating. Will create a separate thread with the details. I'm also going to hopefully create a behind the scenes video for those who are looking to learn more in compositing.
If this all goes well then perhaps I'll make it a monthly side challenge??? |
