I hate crowds.

I hate shopping.

I hate lineups.

I hate waiting.

I hate slowness.

I just got back from getting a final stocking stuffer and the dang city is grid-locked with shoppers and stores are packed with lineups winding through the aisles. I'm not leaving the house again, ever!

This stupid, supposed recession sure isn't slowing down the rabid Burlington retailites.

Take a deep breath, pour a glass of rum and eggnog, turn on "A Christmas Story", and then surf porn.

I'm surprised more people don't shop online. Since so many people shop the "big" stores anyway, why not make it easier on yourself and use Amazon?

Not really useful for last-minute small stuff.

hmm. I suppose the real problem here is procrastination.

Perhaps. Sometimes though, it's simple over-look or an unanticipated request or idea, or any number of factors that come together through no fault of one's own and you end up having to brave the craziness to grab just that one thing.

how to ...

My last minute stuff will be from the local chocolate store down the street and from Discount Drug Mart.

1. Shipping rates.
2. Refurbished items passed as new
3. Return policy - refer to #1
4. All around bad service in general
5. OUT OF STOCK
6. Credit card theft
7. Bad merchandise/defective/broken/used - you never know what you're going to get
8. Duties, taxes, custom fees and whatever else I forgot to add

I used to shop online but not anymore because of any one of the listed reasons above.

I did most of my shopping this year (and last year) on Amazon, and had absolutely no problems. I have the prime membership, so everything was shipped free and received in 2 days or less. I just make sure to order directly from Amazon, not one of the marketplace vendors. I did get one thing for myself that was refurbished, but I knew that when I bought it as it was very clearly stated on the website. I saved a buttload of $$ and avoided the crowded stores. And no, I'm not affiliated with them in any way.

I'm with Telehubbie. Did all my Christmas shopping on-line, most through Amazon. Next day delivery, no P&P charges, and reliable service, with everything that I wanted in stock.

1. Shipping rates.
With online shopping, you pay for shipping. Otherwise, you pay for your time to find something. Think about driving to 4 different ToysRUs stores to find one item.

2. Refurbished items passed as new
Just shop at good sites and this doesn't happen.

3. Return policy - refer to #1
Just check the return policy. The company I work for, we eat the shipping if something went wrong. If you just don't like it, you have to eat the shipping. At least you don't have to drive it back to the store.

4. All around bad service in general
5. OUT OF STOCK
6. Credit card theft
7. Bad merchandise/defective/broken/used - you never know what you're going to get
Sorry, but if you buy from a crappy store, you're going to get crappy service. Same with online shopping.

8. Duties, taxes, custom fees and whatever else I forgot to add
Taxes? not if you buy out of state.

Why, on earth, does every thread have to devolve into this bitter nitpicking and bitching?

If you love online shopping, do it. If you don't, don't do it. Horror stories can be told from both sides. This was a venting from someone that was frustrated when he ran out to pick up a stocking stuffer. Could have happened running out to pick up milk.

Jeezus Pete people, settle down :)

You're right but I forgot to add I'm out of country, in Canada. Taxes are added to all our purchases now so no more out of state (province) deals for us Canucks. It used to be no taxes but they quickly remedied that. Now with gas at super low levels I don't mind driving around after verifying prices through the net. I live near big cities so that helps.

Slippy, next year it's gift cards for everyone, they will be warned after this year's gifts are given. All I'll have to do is choose a store for each person. ;]

Well, I'm bitching ;D

As for shooting the shit, I have to say that I despise gift cards. Complete and utter wastes of time and money. Actually, come to think of it, I despise any kind of gift that is simply "grabbing it from the shelf and spending money on it", but gift cards are the absolute worst. Why would anyone in their right mind spend money on something in order to limit someone else on where they can spend that money? I just don't get it. It's not even about convenience. If you really just want someone to buy what they like, give them cash! Then they really can buy what they want. No more, "wow, I have $50, but I can only go to Zellers? Thanks!"

Just another version of "Here's my obligation fulfilled, see you next year."

Ever buy gifts for 17 and 21 year olds? My 21 year old has moved out and needs a ton of stuff for his apartment but I don't want to choose everything for him. He works and makes a darn good salary so giving him money would be uneventful, to say the least. I also don't want him to spend the money on gambling or booze or any other object I wouldn't ever buy him. If I give him a gift certificate for Ikea, I know darn well he's going to buy stuff for his home. :) Besides the stuff I did buy him that I know he wanted and will appreciate.

My 17 year old is getting xbox games, easy choice this year. :)

That's it, gifts for my two sons. Been like that for 15 years now. :)|

Just buy the VISA gift cards. They work just like cash...actually better, since you can use them online.

I gotta put my 4 cents in here:

Gift cards are great ... (FOR THE STORES!).
I unscientifically estimate that 13% of all gift card money is lost or not spent - it's probably higher.

The Visa gift cards usually cost money to BUY! ... not to mention are often more of an inconvenience than anything. What a conspiracy that is. What happens when someone has $2.14 cents left on that Visa? ... then they have to pay using the card and another card or cash - how awkward this becomes with people at the register.

Now that I got all worked up on Christmass eve eve ... Send cash please ;P

Well, to each their own, but for me, if the only reasons for giving gift cards are for trust issues, that's a whole different ball-game! ;)

I hate the lines but something I got from my mother is a love of crowds during the holidays, it is fun like a game, almost have to jog through the store to keep up, darting left and right between people, fun times!
