A over all weak year for movies (I’ve only seen 86 movies so far this year), but there were a few gems. Definitely the most over rated movie of the year was Dark Knight, IMO. My picks for best of 2008â€Â¦.

Slumdog Millionaire (my pick for best movie of the year the rest is alphabetic)

Blindness (It̢۪ll be a crime if it doesn̢۪t get best cinematography)
Brick Lane
In Bruges
MILK
Miracle at St. Anna
My Blueberry Nights
Rachel Getting Married
Visitor, The (in a fair world Richard Jenkins would get the best actor Oscar)

Documentaries

2 Million Minutes
The Business of Being Born
Flow: For Love of Water
Religulous
Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?

Yours?

I haven't seen 86 movies in my entire life. WOW!

Haven't seen a single movie you listed so I can't offer my thoughts. Sorry.

Steven, I agree that "Dark Knight" was overrated, though I enjoyed it anyway. As for the movies on your list, I've only seen "In Bruges" -- good movie, though I wouldn't call it Oscar material, except for maybe Colin Farrell's performance.

The only other new movies I remember seeing this year are Vicki Christina Barcelona (enjoyable; also probably not worthy of Oscars) and Wall-E.

Do you think Wall-E might be up for best picture? :-)

I'd vote for Wall-E in a micro-second.

The only movie I've seen out of all those mentioned is "The Dark Knight" as well, and the only thing about it that would make it overrated in my books was the length. The acting, however, was phenomenal. As was the story really. Just needed to be shorter. Should have been two movies.

I try to see at east two a week, but then again I never watch TV except for an occasional CBS Sunday Morning.

I've heard Sean Penn is a great contender for best actor for his role in Milk, never actually saw the movie though.

Dark Knight was highly overrated, couldn't agree with you more. But i think Heath Ledger was fantastic, and I'm not sure if you can receive a nomination if you aren't alive to accept it? Anyways I think he should be nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

As for my favourite movie this year, I'd have to say Australia. Although I haven't seen many other movies that are probably better.

Posthumous awards are given all the time.

Err, meaning post-death, not posthumous

Dark Knight was far from overrated. It brought thought, style and substance to a genre rife with eye-candy and bad acting. What other action film in the last five years sent people home to possibly contemplate philosophical questions of morality? I'd say it's been almost ten years, 1999 to be exact, since The Matrix did the same thing.

If you don't like action films you can't blame that on the movie. I'll be the first to agree action films are generally pretty silly, but this only makes the few gems of the genre stand out all the more. I agree it was possibly too long and the movie was forced to basically skip Bale's acting ability as it concentrated on the characters of The Joker and Two-face. Batman was forced to play it pretty straight laced to act as a counter tempo to the roles of chaos and chance.

yeah but I'm 17, I don't like to think about intricate hootenanny or whoosie whatsit. Maybe Dark Knight had a unique style and brought in a philosophical aspects that people may like, but just for me it got a bit confusing. Maybe it's because I'm not a die-hard Batman fan, who has loved it since the Adam West days where they danced and sang musicals with those strange catchphrases after every blow :P

The only reason why this style worked with the Matrix so well was because of the Sci-Fi twist it had. It correlated with the genre, which why it was effective.

Well, I didn't leave contemplating questions of morality. Contrived situations with hokey, sappy endings by a team of writers don't a morality conflict make for me.

Care to nominate a better action film from say 2007-2008?

I'm not saying it wasn't a good movie. I just didn't find it as moralistically deep as you found it. I already said the only thing wrong about it was the length.

I don't disagree with the length. Frankly I think most good movies are 90-100 minutes tops.

I only saw 20 films from 2008 due to the fact I see most on DVD and so have only seen Despereaux among all movies released after August.

On that small list I'd probably nominate The Visitor as the best. A well played character drama with a bittersweet but heartwarming theme.

In the animated genre I really enjoyed Kung Fu Panda and WALL-E.

I really liked the Dark Knight. I think it is problably the best movie of the year.

Also Wall-E was a great piece of work. Unfortunatly I think many didnt get Wall-E's Beauty. Some cant stand the fact that there was almost no dialog. I in the other hand, Loved how they master to pull it off. Keeping it interesting all the way thru.

I would like to make an addition in the Documentary category:

Dear Zachary, A Letter to a Son about his Father

I'm used to documentaries of this sort being emotional, as this one was, but not many have a "twist" like this one. And the editing style and pacing was just remarkable!

For an action movie the Dark Knight was good but we are talking action movie. Lets keep some perspective! I have to side with K10DGuy on the morality issues. I actually believe that brought the movie down not elevate it. At times it just seem so forced and contrived, the boat scene being one of them and the wiretapping being another. Lets not kid ourselves the movie did well because it had cool action sequences and Heath Ledger was very good in his part.

As for being the best action movie this year? I don't know. It is the only one I've seen this year.

Milk is the best movie I've seen this year. I haven't seen Slumdog Millioniare or the Visitor but have been wanting to. Btw, has anybody seen The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke?

This thread has made me go back and look over the movies of past years. I started with 2004 for some reason. I thought I'd share my Top 5 for the year.

In 2004 I saw 73 films.

Top 5 in no order:
The Aviator
Million Dollar Baby
Sideways
Napoleon Dynamite
Super Size Me
Touching the Void

Crap. That's 6. You can find the list for 2004 here. Since it seems hyperfocal sees a lot of movies I'd be interested in his Top 5 for that year and other years. The Netflix queue is generally short these days. I'm running out, although I just added Touching the Void and Sideways again.

Tropic Thunder

Not really fair since it was the only movie that I saw in theaters that I can remember this year...oh wait I did see that Harold and Kumar movie as well. Now that I think about it, Iron Man is the best movie this year. I loved that movie. Get Smart was pretty good as well, Hancock made me laugh a little. Expelled, No Intelligence Allowed was also a good movie. Biggest laugh that I got all year was House Bunny and her voice when she remembers names.

I can't wait to see this, it's coming out on DVD in February. They showed it on MSNBC but I don't get that channel. It all happened here in Newfoundland so you can imagine it was all over the news for quite a while.

I think Jennifer Aniston needs to present Best Actor and Billy Bob Thornton present Best Actress... :)

These things are so political it's not even funny.

Avoid them at all costs. (Errr, I mean I avoid them at all costs, not that anyone else should)
