People who want to require comments on votes of 1, 2, or 3:
For goodness sake, do you think it might be good to ask at the same time to require comments on votes of 8, 9, or 10?
Outliers exist on both sides of the scale. There's definitely been the last place finishers that get that 10 vote. I'm not sure I agree that attempting to reduce/eliminate outliers is a good thing, but doing so from both sides of the scale makes more sense to me than simply saying "unjustified low votes are bad". |

Agree whole-heartedly - I have been the recipient of unaccountably high votes on a number of photos, and these are just as inexplicable as the 1s, 2s and 3s on ribbon winners.
Nobody should be made to comment; willingly given comments are (to my mind, at any rate) likely to be of far greater value to the photographer than those that have been press-ganged. |

I think when that happens, you should receive an email requiring you to post some justification in a public forum. Then the system should automatically evaluate your justification and determine if you are "right" and if not, you would be terminated. If you are right, anyone who did not give the image a 10 would be terminated. Extreme subjectivity has no place on this site. Eventually the terminations would serve to reduce the number of members, therefore reducing the number of suggestions to force people to do things. As far as the definition of "termination" - I'll leave that open to interpretation.
Barring my suggestion above, I would agree with Kelly that any requirement should be at both ends of the scale, but I also think requiring comments would have an extremely adverse effect - I hated the popup that suggested I leave a comment! 4 would become the new 1 and scores would be tainted as a result. IMO, a "3" vote on my image is a comment in itself. If it comes from one person, it carries no weight. If it comes from 100 people, my image sucks.
going back to my plow...

Here's the discussion. I think it's over. No need to start a new thread:

Comments on 1/2/3, why?
Simple. If you gave me a 2 you think my image is bad, sucks and should be destroyed. Alright, why? Are you a troll (and therefore leave no comment) or can you really offer me some guidance so that I can get better? Perhaps you have no knowledge of what makes a good image so can't comment...but then why are you voting and how did arrive at a 1/2/3?
Most comments on the 8/9/10 end of things are "GREAT!" "Luv it!" - useless comments, photographically speaking. If one leaves a similar comment on a 1/2/3 "Sucks" "WTF were you thinking" "Hate it" then the commenter gets ridiculed.
Perhaps we need a system of merits - if you comment on 10% of the entries in a challenge you get a merit. Get 10 merits and get a medal. get 10 medals and get into the page of fame or some such. HOWEVER, the average length of your comment (word count) need to be taken into account IMO, to keep the 'luv it' and 'sux' comments from counting toward your medals.

and that's just your own, personal, subjective definition of what a 2 means. It doesn't mean that is what the person who voted it a two means by a 2.
1=Bad 10=Good. Anything else is open to interpretation.

So only people who can take a better photograph can have an opinion on if an image is good or not ? Photographers are probably the worst people to evaluate an image based on if it is good or not. Far too hung up on things that don't matter or busy half learning techniques and finding things distracting that the rest of the world don't even notice.

Actually Judi made up ribbons and hands them out to people that comment on 100% of the challenges.

DirtDiver: I wasn't bugged by you specifically. :-)
And I am sorry about another thread on the topic - I just didn't know which thread to put it in (I think I saw more than one recently) and while certain threads may be over I don't think this idea ever really dies. But I'm sorry.. I realized after I posted that perhaps another thread about it may have been kind of annoying. |

Just make sure that who ever you give the 1 to, the photo sucks. Sucks as in technically not a good picture, not sucks as in you don't like it because it's awesome.

I dunno.......
I think I'll vote as the spirit moves me......
Every now and the if I feel so inclined, I'll leave a comment.
I've left one word comments on 10s sinmply because I was so blown away and "Exquisite" summed it up perfectly.
I think I'll continue to vote and comment as it feels right to me.
Maybe we should all do that.
