Iraklis and others, I know, have taken an interest in a compact (i.e. discreet) camera that delivers DSLR-like quality for street shooting. The Simga DPx series is currently the most promising thing out there, but this article offers a more in-depth look and a glimpse into the future:

And check out this prototype from Olympus:

Just thought I'd share...

I've been eyeing that one as well...

Not a camera of course but how about this?

Do you have one of these? Does it affect picture quality? I'm interested...

Not yet. It is affordable and I'm thinking about it. I want to do some more research on it. I'll let you know if I do.

Yes, the prototype.

I took my P&S with me on a business trip and attempted to use it while I had a few minutes wandering in town before the train left to come back home. Oddly, I find it very hard to use a P&S. I guess I'm just more comfortable with the camera in front of my face! I think it helps that a few people notice me, but then don't pay any attention. I do get "caught" periodically, though. In those instances, perhaps a P&S would be better. I'm not entirely sure.

There's only been a few instances where the "discreet" thing hurt me a bit but honestly not very often. When I shoot in low income neighborhoods the big camera gets people paranoid (why... I can only assume) but I don't mind not taking a picture if I feel the subjects might be annoyed if they knew. Genuine shots are great but if I feel like I'm being purposely sneaky, I don't feel good about it. I do it enough but it feels a tad icky sometimes, so I stick with the big gun and charge in. It takes some rocks but I dig the energy and I don't even bring out any long lenses these days. The 70-200mm is nearly retired.

I have a Canon G9 and I can't stand it. While I did think about the Sigma full frame they really blew it with the cameras first release so I'm not impressed with the company based on that.

I really don't have good energy with Point And Shoots. Can't explain why that is but I much prefer a DSLR.

Are you referring to the DP1, Steve? For all its flaws (or perhaps "quirks"), I'd say it was quite an impressive first attempt. To dismiss the entire company based on this otherwise revolutionary first release might just be your loss.

Of course neither of us owns this camera, so it's probably premature for either of us to draw conclusions. The DP2 promises to address the painful read/write times and other issues of the DP1, so we'll see. The image quality speaks for itself, I think. Neither is going to compete with the professional DSLR's, but I think they can give the likes of the Rebel a run for their money.

Played with the E-520 this week. I love the image quality, but on the street, I'm much more comfortable with a point-and-shoot. The Sigma might just be the compromise between comfort and image quality for me.

I own a 105mm Macro which I love so, as far as lenses they do well but the camera, which I did use missed the mark.

It's done...picking up my Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX 3 after work today...
The point and shoot I want for a number of reasons... Sometimes I just don't feel like lugging my DSLR with me...

For example, I'm going to a party tonight which should be good fun and I'll take some shots, witout feeling like, "Hey! there's the guy with the big camera!" or, "damn where should I leave this as I go git myself another beer to polish...."

Generally I feel comfortable taking pictures in situations that perhaps someone else might not... I have noticed though sometimes when people notice you taking a picture with a big camera they tense up more than when you have a little one. Sometimes the opposite works better. In the central meat market I get mistaken sometimes for a reporter, and they let me get close in there...

Sometimes when I ask to take someone's picture there is a different reaction to a small camera compared to a larger one...

I don't know, I guess the main reason is to have a good compact that fits in my pocket for those situations when I opted to not carry around my SLR, but regretted it later.

Good to hear. Can't wait to see what you bring to the table with it. I've still got my eye on the Sigma -- either the DP1 which has the lens I want and I can probably get for a good price, or the yet-to-be-released DP2, which corrects a lot of the problems of the DP1 and will come with some other enhancements.

But one camera at a time. I got the new Olympus E-520, my first DSLR, about three weeks ago, and mostly it's been sitting in the box. A combination of no time to do anything because of the holidays, and completely uncooperative weather. Add to that the "learning curve" and the intimidation of a camera three or four times the size of what I'm used to, and you get the idea.
