I have read several threads that "complain" and "whine" about people not voting and commenting...since I have joined (sep 08, not long ago) I have voted on all challenges (can you say the same), and I am amazed at how many do not vote, but I find it hard to comment on the photographs, it is easy with the ones that I like. But the ones that I don't like or find offensive or repetative are so hard to comment on...I try to comment, on my top picks, although I find it hard to comment on my least favorite ones (as I am afraid I will offend someone), do you have any words of wisdom here???? And with all the whining about no one voting,...if you enter a photo...vote...if everyone that enters votes, plus all the others that vote...we would blast them out of the water and if you don't vote shut-up (said in the kindest of ways...hmmm)....that is my 2 cents on the subject...

You know what you do.

You comment and say what you think.

Doesn't really matter if they like it or not.

This is about how the photograph makes YOU feel.

Supposedly they took the photo and submitted it into a challenge.

So it has to speak to you.

So do what I do, Say what you think, feel and get from the shot.

Edited to add: I don't really care if a person comes back to me and says, "you suck for saying that comment" I am saying what and how I feel. I may not know all the technical aspects of how they do it or why they do it. But I comment anyways. In fact I just reiewed a couple fo my comments, and it reads like a bad porno film it was that graphic. But you know what, that is what I got from it, that is what the photo felt like to me so I said it.

This is exactly what I mean...if I want pron...I will seek it out....but many feel that art and pron are hand in hand....I find it to be extreamly offensive...ol'prude that I am...

nononono, I didn't mean that at all. There was shot in one of the Challenges and the comment that I left sounded like a bad porno script. It went something like this.

Comment:
this is actually a fabulous shot, I adore the golden tones that are creeping into your darker rich browns, the curves long to be teased into a straight line. You just want to feel this in your hands and feel the ribbed metal sliding through as you pull it straight. Amazing lighting glowing onto the curves, bringing out the softness of it even though you know it is hard. The darkness of the black just pulls you into the abyss and makes you want more. 9

This was about a piece of wire. And what I described was how the shot made me feel. It had nothing to do with porn or sex, but about the photograph and what it spoke and how it spoke to me.

But then again, I have left comments that say " interesting shot" and such like.

You have to say what you feel, how the photograph makes you feel, what you get from a photograph.

Okay , rereading that, it makes me seem like some sort of nutter.

Ignore me!!

I was about to ask what pron was, but now I know! I had to laugh at this because when you read the comment without the photo, it does read a bit like one of those romance novels that my mom used to read.

Personally in the past Ive tried to comment as often as time permits, which is something I have a shortage of. But I fidn that by thinking about other peoples work and pointing out what I like or didnt it helps me figure out how to look at my own work more objectivly. I always appreciate feedback on my work, in fact I activly seek it out. For me its the best way to grow.

I know someone mentioned that they sometimes just put interesting shot. Although something like this is nice, and I understand for time reasons why people dont make every comment in depth, its just not feesable. But for me I would be thinking, well what is interesting about it? I may be assuming its one thing when the viewer was thinking something totally different.

Dont be embarassed to state your opinion, people are putting their work out there for the purpose of being judged, so then why shouldnt you judge it and provide feekback as to why.

I thought the same thing when I read the title, but the OP has a good point. How do you make a constructive comment on something that you find offensive, or just plain bad? Maybe I'll make a generic comment generator. If you think the shot deserves a comment of 10, type in 10 and it will spit out something like; Excellent composition and great lighting. If you think it deserves a comment of 1 it will spit out something like; Cute bird, I really like feathers.

Two options:

1) Take the high road. Any variation of: "While I personally find this offensive/insulting to
2) Don't comment. You don't have to you know. There's no shame in skipping a photo that you simply feel that you cannot comment fairly or constructively on. No shame at all. Period.

The shots that you give the mediocre votes of 4 and 5 are the hardest ones to comment on, but they are also the ones that present the best opportunity to improve your own photography. If you make yourself analyze what it is about an image that makes it "just ok" and not anything that stands out, you will learn things that you apply to your own photography. Thsi benefits both the photographer of the shot and yourself as the voter.

What bothers me are the obvious votes to bring scores down. Just look at the winning photo's scores. How can some people justify giving these a 1? Maybe if you enter a challenge you shouldn't be allowed to vote in that particular challenge.

And with all the whining about no one voting,...if you enter a photo...vote...if everyone that enters votes, plus all the others that vote...we would blast them out of the water and if you don't vote shut-up (said in the kindest of ways...hmmm)....that is my 2 cents on the subject...

For starters...your average vote cast is 3.9146 for 6,619 entries. That's a pretty low vote average. So obviously many of the images offend you! If you find them so offensive....why don't you say so in your comment? I noticed you do with some...but 160 comments from 6,619 entries is a pretty low ratio....and yet you say that you find it easy to comment on the ones you like...so obviously there aren't many photos on DPC that you like...especially when that 160 comments is covering both good and bad images in your eyes. Yes....I read your comments and some of them are obviously on images that you don't like!

My husband and I were only discussing this problem earlier. And it should be easy enough for a programmer to write a programme that scrubs all votes 3 or lower that are not accompanied by a comment. This would not only encourage people to say what they don't like about the photo...but would also discourage people from low voting for alternative reasons...ie, making their own score higher placed at the end...prejudice voting, such as flowers or nudity or puppies etc...when realistically they should be voting on whether the image meets the challenge and/or is a technically sound image.

Just my two cents worth.

you had me until you railed against "prejudiced" voting. Photography isn't solely about technicals or meeting the challenge. They are important, yes, but so is connecting with your viewer. So is trying to evoke emotion. With that, you take the good and you take the bad.

If you have a vote scrubber that scrubs everything with a 3 or lower without a comment, you HAVE to have a scrubber that scrubs everything an 8 or higher without a comment. Why? So that it discourages people from voting unusually high for alternative reasons.. ie: voting for friends, prejudiced voting, such as on water drops or frogs or glasses in front of colored backgrounds etc...

Well, I was looking too...and my 6,619 votes are for 3 months....in 3 more months I will have more votes than you have in an average year...as to my average voting score...I am presently working on that I have been bumping around on the voting scale and I think I am getting more comfortable with that. I look at the challange...did they meet the challange, how do I like the photograph. But, I still say each of us should vote on all entries (not just the required 20%). I have gotten some great advice from this thread regarding a closer look at the middle range and making comments on those and looking for what makes them medium to me, and not feeling bad about telling someone that I just don't like their photograph, now that is advice I can put to use and what I was looking for...I will be doing that in the future...when I joined in Sep...I didn't feel comfortable making any comments (thus the low comments number)...what I want to do is make more comments and do a good job with it...not sit here with a drink and insult people.... I just wanted to hear from ya'll on how you process and make your comments...and I will tell you that making comments on all the photographs would be to large of a task...unless it is a small entry.

When I comment on a photo, whether I like the photo or not, I try to find something to like or something they did right.

If the image is disturbing, I'll mention it. If there are areas that I think can be improved, I try to make suggestions. If I don't like something I'll say so, but I do always try to find something to compliment. There are not too many images that are completly worthless.

Some pretty healthy coding would need to be put in place...wouldn't take long to post any kind of comment to avoid the scrubber.

Whenever I see people listing what they don't want to see photographed I always ask this question.

Would you make a list for us so we know what items to photograph and what items we shouldn't photograph. Thanks a bunch. :) Maybe you can get the SC to sticky it too. ;|

You should take a look at Judi's profile ... she has commented on 100% of the photographs in quite a few challenges ... it's really not that hard to do ...

As one of the proud members of the 100% Comment Army of Judi - commenting on every entry in a challenge is not a hard thing to do. It takes a bit of time but it is actually one of the best ways to improve your own photography skills - analyzing and critiquing others work to find what works well and doesn't. After i started commenting more, the quality of my work clearly improved...
