I had a Canon 70-200L 2.8 IS but got rid of it b/c it was a Monster i didn't use it much, not to mention how expensive it was!!!!! But still need/want a faster zoom lens..
Anyone own the Sigma 70-200 2.8? I have heard and read very good things!!!

| Just MHO but I think you gave up the fastest and best zoom lens made. So not sure how anything other than that would get used more and create similar results. |

| Oh i agree.... i just can't justify spending that much money on a lens. IDK... i felt guilty every time i looked at it! Not asking for anything better, there isn't, just wondering about the sigma. |

| My understanding is that it's been almost completely re-designed, so you should qualify any opinion with understanding that they may be referring to the older version. |

The only way to tell is give the Sigma a try. Wide open, I don't think it will be as good as the Canon, and AF speed will almost certainly be slower than the Canon. Also, consider that Sigma lenses often need to be re-chipped for new Canon bodies. They reverse engineered the Canon communication protocol, so when Canon updates it, Sigma's lenses may no longer work properly.
Personally, I won't buy Sigma, but that is a very personal preference. |

I have the Sigma 70-200mm EX APO Macro1:2.8 DG HSM and I use it for all sorts of things and it is an excellent lens. Wish it had a bit more reach but you get that.

I haven't heard any recent issues with Sigma chips, but my only personal experience is with the Sigma 105ex. My biggest complaint with that one is the focusing motor- it's not Sigma's quicker HSM mechanism. I think it uses continental drift. :-/ |

The obvious choice would be 70-200f4 non IS.... It's always been a bargain but now it's cheaper since most go for the IS version of the f4 now [The f4IS is probably a better lens but since you mention price].... I see good copies go for less then $500 on buy & sell around the place and it's just a beautiful lens - you not going to find a better lens apart from MAYBE maybe maybe the other 2 70-200L's..... People overplay the difference between f4 & f2.8 IMO.... one stop... If you want fast then you need for 135L f2 or something.

| Thanks guys.. I do appreciate the feedback. I thought about the Canon 70-200 L 4.0 but was a little concerned if i wanted to take pics in lower light. You've given me something to think about!!!! |
