Turning thirty was the start of the road to true adulthood for me. (Maybe I feel that way because it was also the year I met my spouse.) I enjoyed my thirties, and felt like I was becoming a fully formed person. When I turned forty, I felt even better. I turned forty-four this past September, and I feel the most emotionally matured I ever have. Getting older is hard on the body, but great for your psyche.

Imagine it's 2049. You're now 60 and you're writing the book jacket for a biography of yourself. Now complete this:

"At 29, Sam noticed for the first time that his life was just beginning. Since then he made it amazing by ..."

Pee in all 50 states (I'm at 49).

look back at your 20's and go "...what the F...?, where did the time go? what did I do? what am I going to do?"

Then, and only then, get a shot of whiskey, or tequilla. Take a swig. Go to the nearest mirror and look at yourself, and with contempt, and fear say, looking into your eyes, "I'm old, happy f...ing birthday."

Why do I have an image in my mind of you not having to take a leak while passing through RI?

oops

no list here, but personally, i think 30 is the perfect age. you are old enough that nobody considers you "wet behind the ears", but still young enough to not be a geezer either. congrats on reaching the perfect age.

Funny you should say that... I literally drank a couple cans of Pepsi before heading into RI from CT last fall, just to be sure. I hadn't been to RI since 1997 previously, and I couldn't be sure I had peed there during that visit.

-take an african safari and see the migration
-go to see polar bears in the wild before they are extinct
-if you can't afford to go that far go to the local spca and spend a day walking the dogs
-spend a weekend living on the streets with only 10 bucks in your pocket to realize how lucky you are
-tell the people that you love the most why they are so important to you
-volunteer to teach someone to read
-forgive everyone who has wronged you, decide not to be a victim of them any more, and live free to love again
-plant a tree

well, the first one was good, it tapered off with the second one and I lost all interest by the third..

The one about teaching someone to read, well I put an ad up in the local newsagents but no one contacted me.. then I realised they couldnt read.

Here are my suggestions, in no particular order...

*Visit Canada.
*Have hot sex with an older woman.
*Shoot with fellow dpcers.
*Hang out with a cancer survivor.
*Spend time with those living in Palliative Care at St Vincent's.
*Find, and buy, amazing props at the local Sally Ann/charity-run thrift shop.
*Look around every room of your living space. Select the least pleasing item, and donate it to charity (IF it is in good shape).
*Ditto for your closet.
*Go 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Manchu.
*Watch Stacey Westfall's INCREDIBLE 2006 freelance reining ride on Wizard's Baby Doll. When you watch the video you'll see what's so amazing about it. Watch, and admire.

Yup. I strongly recommend that video to everyone. I know how she does it but I certainly don't have access to a horse of that calibre!

Oh and another one, if you're a cat person: watch two cats of the same breed, but differing ages/sizes/sexes play. Imagine a Lincoln Navigator chasing a Smart Car. Then visualize the Smart Car chasing the Navigator.

Lol, me too. But I am kind of thankful for it, since I am also turning 30 in a few months and have been pondering if it is the end of the world also. :)

My 30's have ruled!!! ~ still young enough and limber enough to do all the wild, adventurous stuff and much more able to afford it! The stuff you thought was great in your 20's is just childs play when you have have more income to throw at it! 40, on the other hand, is the one i'm wondering about... (ehem - prostate exams)... I imagine all of your time will be spent searching for a good looking doctor with small fingers...

I've been to Iraq and Tokyo. It is cool to say I've been there, but I was much happier with the time I spent in NYC.

Exactly, i feel the same way. i turned 29 in september and i was supposed to get married in May. I decided that he wasnt the guy for me after 6 yrs. Now i'm single, childless, and running out of eggs! It's very depressing when all of my friends are either married or already have children. Now all i have is my two cats, my career, and soon to be lonely nights. It was very hard to leave but I had to take the chance.

Wow, that is incredibly brave of you. Kudos. I think you might like the book Eat, Pray, Love.

the earlier you start the less you'll regret about not doing it :)

I recommend paragliding - similar to hang-gliding, but with a modified parachute.
