I know that people can see the EFIX data using some software from Firefox but, does anyone know if IP addresses can be seen on photos entered into the site?

Is the IP in the EXIF? If so, what section?

I'm pretty certain that an IP address does not get attached to EXIF. It's a completely separate entity.

It begs the question though, what on earth would you want that information for?

I think that's impossible.

That's about right. IP addresses and photos/EXIF natively have nothing to do with each other. Are you trying to figure out what IP address the client computer that uploaded a photo is coming from?

Hacking into the computer in question and watch the other pictures there, obviously ;-)

You would not be able to tell which picture came from which image on this side of things. However if you were server side or could get into the server side of the site you could trace the image back to the user and then the user to the IP address. However there are easier ways of obtaining IP address.

From the IP address you can pin point a users house to about a 1 mile radius but with some further knowledge you could find out which block they live on or even with some luck the house they live in. But is that what you are looking for?

ROFL........Ok, in case anyone thinks that there's anything "SINISTER" going on in my mind........as I think K10Guy does *chuckle*....there's not! *really laughing here*

I was wondering this because I was pm'd by someone during a challenge, WHILE still in voting phase...someone that I don't personally know and therefore, they wouldn't know me or my shots and yet, this person KNEW which shot was mine somehow.

I have NO idea HOW they knew....just that they seemed to know and I had NOT shared my photos with anyone (I don't belong to any teams) nor was there anything familiar in it from previous photos. It was a "generic" photo that anyone could have taken with NO identifying objects, models etc. to it. So, I couldn't figure out HOW this person seemingly knew that much.

The only 2 things that came to mind were perhaps, camera model in the EFIX data (I have a rarer camera in here...only a handful, I think in here using it as I'd looked into other people using this model to ask about it before I bought it) or, the possibility that it was possible to see my IP address in some way. I didn't know that Firefox had a utility in software to be able to see the efix data so, I figured, perhaps, there was a way to see IP addresses that I didn't know about???

Obviously, that's not the case.

Nothing wrong was said or done...it just boggled my mind is all in figuring out HOW they knew that? Great guess,or extremely psychic then? LOL

Anyways, K10 and Misty, rest assured that was the reason for my question....nothing more. I was playing Sherlock Holmes here ONLY. Even if I knew IP addresses, I wouldn't know what to do with them. It's all that I can do to get my entries in! LOL

ETA: I did try to ask how they knew...but, there has been no response as of yet.

ahhhh.

If they weren't anonymous, I'd have fired off a, "How'd you know this was mine?" email. SC would probably tell you to contact them and get them to ask. heh.

Darn, I was kind of hoping for some major intrigue. It's been slow here lately ;)

LOL, Ed....wish I were more dramatic than that...but, alas....just a mystery that I was trying to solve for my own knowledge. Ever have one of those things that drives you nearly insane, trying to figure out? Well, this was one of them for me. The other, is what to shoot next that may strike interest. I should be concentrating on that mystery right now! ;-))
