Of course you can take photos of ice and snow to, it's all water in some kind of form. It's always a question how well you can use your imagination. (And your not using if you send in a splash shot, although it might win).

The thing about water drop shots is that people must love them; they always automatically score really, really well. The vocal people might rail about how boring and repetitive they are, but they always get high scores.

That's the depressing part. Someone else might do a wonderful creative image of some other nature, but, ON DPC, a reasonable adequately executed waterdrop shot, which has no deep meaning and thought behind it will smoke that other shot.

I'd just like to see people challenge themselves and not go for the 'easy win'.

*goes off to set up his water droplet shot, now that no one else is doing one, hehe *

Even under the "mineral waters" definition? Come on ... besides, our brains are mostly water contaminated by a few proteins and electrolytes (at least after drinking enough beer).

Anyone ever read the original version of Gulliver's Travels? During his visit to Lilliput, Gulliver has occasion to extinguish a fire by "making water." (Also a consequence of drinking too much beer.)

Another debate : When does beer become beer and stops being water ?
or more clearly visible : when does tea become tea and stops being water ?

I believe that this thread will have the opposite of its intended effect.

There will now be even more water drop shots because now EVERYONE knows they score well.

LOL.

Or people will take photos of anything that contains water (like beer, brains..... eyeballs.....)

ice, water, steam, slush, freezing rain
are all water Hydrogen 2 Oxygen 1 = h2o
they would not be considered water if the chemical formula was changed.

what you are confusing is the STATE the water is in - thats what changing.

and as far as life on other planets goes - they think there may have been life on mars - but now the WATER is frozen - there is a good possiblity there is life frozen in the ice actually ( bacterium and such i mean ) not martians.

snow is water - and being in vermont this time of year after 2.5 feet of snow yesterday - will most likely be the subject of my water shot..

if i can finally find time to take some photos that is..

beer is water at its best in my mind ;}

We have life here on earth which lives in ice, and in boiling/near-boiling water. However, my own opinion is that these are adaptations, and that the far and away most likely environment for life to arise would be warm, liquid, and very "dirty" water, the proverbial "primordial soup."

We all wish the rest of the voters would feel this way!
Sometimes I think we can easily forget why we are voting.

soup is mostly water ;}

adaptations? - so possibly on mars for instance these creatures adapted when the liquid water began to freeze into frozen water ( ice )

just because life on earth started in water is no reason to believe that is the case everywhere else.

BTW we have life ( an ecosystem even ) on earth - that lives in/on a highly acidic methane/ammonium gas off at the bottom of the ocean - i think its actually in the gulf of mexico. so anything is possible.
there is little to no oxygen.

was merely responding to the post by willem...

yes i know - about 75% water which oddly enough is about the same as the earth.

soup -- I'm trying to agree with you :)

The boudaries of what constitutes life and where it can live are constantly being expanded, and we shouldn't let our own limited imaginations deter those with more creativity.

Like the Bible says: What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. [Ecl 1:9] And the Bible is to be an old book!
Do you know what mean FREEDON of Expression? It is exactly what people is doing! Takin shots of things with some technich that they like or want to use. We are FREE to post anything tha matches DPC rules! I like water shots. When some theme give me inspiration to shot a water drop, I´ll do it. Because photography is art too and art is a form of expression. I hope the water shots continue to be taken. I´ll vote you what you deserve, without TECHNICAL RACISM!!!

i consider ice, steam and snow to be water, because they can revert back to the liquid state

i still consider an egg to be an egg, whether its been fried, scrambled poached or boiled, even though it cant revert back into the shell

OK, it´s only surface, but the humam body is build over 75% of water! People are literally thinking 'in water', hehe.

I assume you meant "deserve". And technical racism, wow, that's a bit over dramatic. Photography for me is as much about creativity as it is about perfecting technique. As such I may practice a technique I see here on DPC and then try to incorporate it into my own creative vision of the challenge, if I use it in a challenge at all. I have voted in one contest so far (Money), and I give weight to creativity as much as I do to technical ability. Recreating the reflecting droplets or the frozen splash doesn't say "creativity" to me, it says "practice". I don't give creativity points for simply practicing. If every photo in the challenge uses the reflecting droplets, how can we consider one any better than the others?

After seeing so many piggy banks and watches in the "Money" challenge, I was really sick of seeing piggy banks and watches. 5 or 10 minutes more thought might have provided those submitters with better ideas.

i say - if you dont want pictures of a particular item - then dont take any of that item - i dont think it is fair to tell the rest of the world what they can and cant photograph.
