My image is definitly fitting the challenge...is crisp and to the point, even with comment predictions of finishing on the first page...but with a score of 5.4, I don't think I am going to make it.

IMHO, too many of the entries are...dare I say it?...interchangable. Not saying they're not good, mostly, but there seem to be a few very strongly adhered to ideas.
Mine sticks out like a sore thumb so of course I'll be lucky if it finishes over 5.

One thing that worked wonders for me is to start comment other members' images. Not only the good ones but also the ones you don't care about. Try to be critical and write what you think would make those images better. But also remember to write why you think images are good and why you think they are good.

This is great advice. I improved significantly when I started commenting on others images. Especially when I commented on very image in a challenge and tried to give meaningful feedback. It really helps you to be more critical for your own photos.

Not bad for a photo that was at 5.3 at 20 votes. Complete opposite to my Periodic Table entry which started at 7.5 after 11 votes and is now down at 5.8. Never seen such big swings in score as I'm having this week.
