to distill:
guns have a single purpose; kill
cameras have a single purpose ; document
you can speak about ancillary purposes but they have no bearing
you can talk about wreaked lives & intimidation
or how you like to use the "tool"
but realistically which would you rather do ..
& i predict this tread will move to rant shortly |

I donno about the artistic value of the craters, but for sure these bombs create eerily beautiful atmospheric phenomena, both short term ("mushroom clouds") and longer-term. Sure as heck doesn't validate their existence in MY eyes :-)

Make that "designed" or "original" purpose, why don'tcha? There are plenty of guns nowadays that are not designed to kill (BB guns, target pistols, there are others), and cameras are regularly used for purposes other than documentation.
Guns originated as weapons. Cameras originated as tools. I think that's your distinction? I mean, you could say that knives originated as weapons, for example, but I don't think that's true. I think knives began (in the stone age) as tools for cutting things and then someone realized they could be used to kill prey, especially if bound tot he end of sticks, and so forth and so on.

I along with many of my friends, as civillians, have owned and shot guns for over 20 years. We have not killed anything except paper targets, and put some dents in iron targets for "turkey" shoots. (The targets were iron, and the turkeys were the prizes for the winners.)
Almost anything, used improperly, can cause harm; up to an including destroying a life.
That being said. Guns are intrinsically more dangerous, than are cameras. I have yet to hear of a person who didn't know their camera was loaded, accidently killing someone with it.
Airplanes are more dangerous than cars. We require tighter controls on who flies an airplane, and where, than we do over who drives a car, and where.
Guns are more dangerous than cars, or airplanes. I have not read any accounts of an inexpieriencd driver or pilot, cleaning their plane or car, and having it take off or drive away with them, killing them.
Therefore in my mind, and as a gun owner, there should be tighter controls on who is allowed to own and operate fire arms, than there is on drivers and pilots.
There should be strict background checks, liscensing and record keeping. I am not afraid of my government, and if I were, I don't believe that the weapons sold to the masses are in any way capable of stopping a tyranical government from doing what it wants. Even the Iraqi Republican Guard, with modern military grade weapons, was incapable of stopping our troops. What is uncle Wally's deer rifle going to do against that?

PS: I also belive that nobody should be allowed to possess or use cigarettes. Their only purpose is to cause addiction, and cause death through cancer and heart disease.

But, I have heard of several instances similar to one fairly recent, local incident where a lady got out of her car, it popped out of gear, rolled over her and did some serious damage to her body. IIRC, she survived, but was in the hospital for a long time. |

there's a lot of common points between guns and cameras
- it shoots
- the bigger, the better
- you are watched suspiciously when handling it in a public place
- the less smoke comes out, the better (especially true for cameras)

Okay look here is my view. If guns kill people then pencils cause mispelled words.
The reality is this. I want a gun in my house so that if God forbid someone breaks in and tries to hurt my family I can stop him. I'm not going to bring a knife to a gun fight I want the best chance of survival. I agree that guns are dangerous but people seem to think that tightening gun control will stop bad things from happening. First off when did banning anything ever work? I mean you couldn't find a drink in the "roaring" 20's could you? What happens when the goverment bans or restricts stuff is that the people who were using things responsibly dont get it anymore. Meanwhile those that where abusing it still find a way to have it. In america you can't smoke pot it's illegal. I never have smoked pot I respect the law but I bet every one of you has know at least one person who smokes it. So in the case of guns restricing/banning is a terrible idea.
Whats going to happen if you can't own a gun because you had a speeding ticket when you were 17 or some idiotic reason and someone breaks into your house? You don't have a gun because you are respecting the law but the guy who just broke into your house? He obviously doesn't give a damn about the law and obviously didn't get the "no guns you are a criminal memo." People are going to die with no way to defend themselves.
Another thing I have noticed and I think the two are tied together is how the USA is cutting men off at the knees. It's apparently not okay to be manly anymore. I mean when I was a kid we picked up sticks and called them swords and guns. Now in the preschool my wife works at anyone who does something like that gets expelled and sent to counseling for fear of becoming a violent killer. I just don't understand this. I fought on the playground with sticks and I would never take another person life unless it ment saving my own or another persons.
Anyways I'm done now. I hope everyone has a good day! |

For every person that successfully defends their home from an invasion, 2 more have a loved-one accidentally shoot themselves or others with that gun they have in their home.
No, banning isn't the answer, but neither is open-ended, unregulated, unrestricted gun access.
The truth is, there IS no solution that is going to satisfy anyone or stops every accident/death, but there needs to be a solution that minimizes these things as much as is humanly possible. The "I need a gun to defend my home" argument is a poor one at best.
*EDIT* I'm not even touching the "manly" thing.

In deference to the delicate sensibilities of various members, my wish to avoid being kicked off the site just yet, litigation, my own vestigial sense of decorum and a few other things, I have replaced the obscenities, puerile mockery of the less (apparently) sophisticated, ad hominem vituperation and nationalist hatred, by asterisks:

It's 80% made up.
From numerous studies and my own attention to the news, however, I'm pretty confident in the theory. |

K10 I completely agree with you about not having free access for idiots who can't remember to lock up their guns. Perhaps a gun safety class every few years would do wonders but I'm not convinced the two for one is a fact as we all know 60 percent of statistics are made up anyway. :D
I don't know that there is a solution but people who are smart and respectful with guns should not be punished. As Uncle Ben once said "With great power comes great responsiblity." |

A kid can not kill himself with his daddy's gun, unless the dumbass leaves it out with ammo available. Which is a criminal offense in my locality. |

Actually no, you can't say that. The Hiroshima bombing was an air burst at about 2000 feet.

When was the last time you saw someone push a bullet into someone's head to kill them? I don't think it has happened, ever, in history. If the guns weren't there, how would you push that bullet into someone's head? hmm
I haven't seen so many NRA slogans in a long time. lol
