i'm working with white only and the shot is overexposed. what is the best way to reduce the glare?

Diffusion.

Place your light source(s) behind a white translucent material of some sort. That way the light is not as harsh.

You can use the dodge tool to darken in increments. But it is better to not get them in the first place. Which in december is legal for members as it is a spot editing tool.

Overexposure is tough to correct in photoshop. If data is lost due to overexposure, there is no way to get it back.

If its for the December member challenge where such things are allowed, you can create a copy of the layer as a second layer in PS with a mask for the overexposed data, and then set the new layer to multiply.

You;ll only be able to recover detail in the highlights if they were not blown out. First look at the histogram to see if it is cut of at the right. If so there are blown highlights in the pic.
To check an area, make sure you have the "info" palette visible, then mouse over the area. If the area is blown out, it will show all RGB values of 255.
