I am going to sell my Sony camera and will include the memory stick. Does anyone know how to delete all information off the card? I know that when you format, all it does is remove reference to files but the info is still in the card. Any ideas?
Thank you! |

If you have a card reader, try mounting it as a disk on your computer and using Norton Wipe Info or similar utility. I don't know if you'd have to reformat it after that. |

Good luck. I've never done this myself, so no warranty included :( |

Pass it thru a strong magnetic field and then format it. |

I have a slightly similar question: I like to use my spare CF cards as removeable storage with my card reader. However, almost every time I use either of 2 Sandisk cards, Windows (XP) tells me the card has to be formatted, even though it has been in my camera or previously in my computer. Before someone makes a point on this - I have a Simpletech card that works fine in the same setup, I've never had to format it in Windows. Anyone else experience this?

My Cyber-shot can reformat inside the camera.
I usually insert my Memory Stick into my Sony reader/writer mouse and have XP do the work. After saving the pictures or information you can have XP automatically erase and reformat the card.

Almost all cameras allow you to format a card. It's usually safer to do it on the camera than on your computer.

Format using the computer and then format using the camera.

There are a number of product both $$ and free you can use. Here are two. One I've tried the other I haven't. Both you can try for free.
Eraser - //www.heidi.ie/eraser/
Autoclave - //staff.washington.edu/jdlarios/autoclave/
You'll find a bunch in your local computer store as well.

A 5 lb hammer and a sturdy anvil will help you delete forever any information on your memory stick.
The drawback here is that it does significantly impair the future performance of same memory stick tho....

Why not taking pictures with the lens cover still on until the card is filled up completely.
This should be the cheapest way to overwrite every byte on the card. Afterwards just format the card.

I'm not sure about the Mavica, but my cybershot won't allow pictures to be taken with the lens cap on.

just take some random pictures of un-interesting stuff - fill the card with shots of your carpet or something.
That'll ensure what ever pictures you are concerned about are over-written, then just format the card. |
