| so in "fun" terms what is the best editing softwares in your opinion. |

| You can never go wrong with photoshop, however if you are looking for fun you might try elements. I've heard its very user friendly. |

I just starting trying out Lightroom 2. There's a free trial on the site. Its handy because it allows you to manage your images AND edit them in one place. Plus the edits are non-destructive. All the editing info is stored in a "side-car file". (A secondary file that is linked to the original). Editing is really quite simple and intuitive. Its also quite powerful.
Drawbacks? So far there is no plug-in (that I've come across yet) for HDR. It doesn't do layers but a lot of the reason you use layers is so you don't alter the original so that's not that big of a deal. I'd recommend giving it a look anyways.

Gimp is open source (free) so it gives you the best value for your money. I have never used Photoshop so I can not compare them. I think its functionality lies between the begineer Photoshop Elements and professional CS3.
What makes PP fun to you? What are you really looking for?

What about a free program (a la GIMP) for Mac users? From a quickie search online, it seems this is only for Windows?
ETA: Um, nevermind. I was too lazy of a searcher, now I see it.

For Mac's i've used //www.pixelmator.com/ and Iris
There was also another one, can't remember what it was called. Firebird or something?
Not that I use my mac much.

Depends on what you mean by "fun" - everyone has their own style and needs.
AutoPano Pro is fun, but its built for a specific task.
Photomatix is also fun, also build for a specific task (HDR photography)
Portrait Professional is also fun, and built for a specific task.
Each of the three programs listed above is better than PS for its intended purpose, but PS is (IMO) the best overall editing program.

IrfanView is a great free program. I use it to quickly review a folder of images, extract EXIF data, and do simple editing. Unfortunately, AFAIK, it's Windows-only ...
Autostitch -- free, functional demo version of software to stitch panoramas.
I also use the Camedia software which came with my Olympus Camera to "print" proof sheets to Acrobat PDF files.
At home, I use Photoshop 5.0 for most of my "real" editing.
