Enjoyed the article... I think the key phrase is: "gratuitous picture taking of the homeless" and "easy target"

If say, there is a wonderful light on a person and would make for a powerful image, I can see why a candid street photographer would not spare them whether they were homeless or just some person minding their own business. I don't think they should be exclusively off limits but, also shouldn't be a case of "here's a guy who hasn't had the luxury of a bath so 'click'". Same goes for the elderly I suppose.

I've been shooting for almost a year now and admittedly the first three months included gratuitous shots of the homeless. I have deleted the vast majority of them, but have kept some.

Yes, a lot of beginners do it because it's there and it's the closest they'll get to something that appears socially conscious. Hopefully they realize sooner than later and see it for what it is...practice at someone elses expense.

I agree, there are some people...homeless or not that have a special light or glow and they may be very worthy of a shot. There are plenty of homeless people that I've found interesting and I have taken a picture but that's as rare as it is with ordinary folk. I don't take it lightly.

I'm trying to be careful not put this in a way where it sounds like I'm telling people what or what not to shoot. Just think about what you're shooting and why...that's all. I hope that's understood. We can define this for ourselves but I personally choose not to take pictures of people at their lowest. Even if you offer them money it's still not terribly fair. I'm sure a down and out person will let you do many things that may compromise them, for a bite to eat. Maybe that gives it some perspective.

I love that satire, blog entry. It's funny and it also points out that the internet, Photography/Photojournalism 101 are flooded with homeless shots to the point where prefessors are choking on them. My favorite line is when they refer to it as "faux photojournalism". Too funny.

All for now.

I'm behind on commenting and posting too, but I'll catch up.

Sounds like there's support for taking this into November, so let's do it! I'll post a call for new and continuing participants.

My goal for November: To get as few WAYSMTP's as possbile from Steve ( pawdrix). None would be ideal, but I need to be realisitc. A downward trend is the best I can hope for!

For the record ..it ain't about the dude. LOL
I just thought the poster was pretty funny and I even thought about asking a gay or lesbian couple to pose/kiss in front of it, just for kicks.
Might have been cool but not my style.

Game Over....

Good stuff, everyone! Thanks for playing. We had some good dialogue and I think we learned a lot from each other. And I can't help but think we inpsired the current challenge, which further helped our cause.

So much fun was it, that we're doing it again in November!

Meantime, I still have to leave comments on the last week or so of images. I will get around to it. I'd encourage the other participants to leave comments on the last several images before departing. Even if you can't do a full sweep, pick and choose a few.
