It's getting colder in most parts of the world (those of you in Southern California and Hawaii and New Orleans have no excuse!), but forum activity suggests that there's interest in continuing our side challenge for another month. (And the current challenge certainly hasn't hurt our cause.) There are some new folks that want in on the fun too.

There's also some enlightening discussion about street photography happening here and there, and I might try to consolidate that as part of the November challenge.

So who's in for another month? Or just in? Include your city or locale.
1. bvy - Pittsburgh
2. Starbanana - Reading, UK
3. Saker - Central California
4. tnun - Vancouver Island.
5. Melethia - Wiesbaden, other German cities
6. salmiakki - Tampere, Helsinki
7. Germaine - ?
8. Maureen Theriot - New Orleans
9. crik - New Orleans
10. Iraklis - Athens, Greece
11. socalsteve - Los Angeles
12. LevT - China
13. chalice - Honolulu
14. shalrath - Seoul
15. dzone1 - Australia
16. kolasi - Riga, Latvia
...
999. pawdrix - New York City

I'm in, weather and daylight permitting. It's already dark by 4.45pm now we put the clocks back, so I may only be a weekend participant. Location, Finland mostly Tampere or Helsinki.

Hey, it's 48 degrees of butt chilling cold here in New Orleans tonight; you're not about to catch me out there. But count me in; we'll be back to normal by the end of the week.

Just imagine if you lived further north -- like Slidell.

I'm going to suggest some new guidelines for this side challenge.

If last month's side challenge was about technique, let's make this one about composition. Most of the folks signing up are returning, so you all have had some good practice. New folks will have to catch up some. Make an effort to look for a story, interaction, emotion, irony. I need to work on this as much as anyone (if not more than everyone), and I'm resisting capturing the guy on his cell phone, the lady with the cigarette, and people not doing much of anything. I challenge all of you to do the same. I think this will also help maintain a steady interest level and hopefully comments. So here it is:

1. This side challenge is not a vitamin! Please no Day 1, Day 2, etc. shots. If you take three great pictures every day, fine. If you only get one or two during the entire month, fine. Quality not quantity, cream of the crop, and all that.

2. Comments should be respectful but also candid and honest. I love sunshine, but it makes me lazy (literally and figuratively, if you get my drift.) If you're prone to hurt (or hurting) feelings, then maybe this isn't your side challenge.

3. I'm going to suggest minimal processing. (Again, I'm terribly guilty of overprocessing.) Let's keep the focus on composition and the story in the image -- not your Photoshop skills. When I say "minimal processing" I don't mean the DPC rule set. You can process your image to death if you like; the idea here is that it not look processed to death.

4. Continue to share your camera settings and, if it's interesting and/or helpful, the story behind the shot.

5. Finally, no pictures of people reading or sleeping unless they have something growing out of their nose.

Of course, I have zero ability to enforce any of this, so do what you will. But I think it will be in everyone's interest to play by these rules, and we can all share the rewards.

So... Anyone else in for this one?

I don't know how much shooting I will be able to do in November, but I will certainly do a lot of processing - just came back from 2 weeks in China with 20GB of photos, many of them street stuff. Will you take me?

OK bvy, I think it will be quite a challenge to get a shot that really relies on the story but it will be more challenging too - and I like that I won't have to feel like I am not keeping up when I have nothing to put in for days at a time, either because I didn't get out shooting or because I just didn't like what I got.. fine with little to no pp - and I will be waiting for the dreaded "Why are you showing me these people" comment(s) :) - Maggie

Given the crack about California, Hawaii, and New Orleans, I guess I have to get in just to uphold the honor of the warm weather folks. (It's getting cold here in Honolulu...a nightly low of 73 degrees.) :P

Possibly an embarrassingly silly Question... Street candids means it is mandatory to include people in the shots right?

I'll be in Seoul!

Wouldn't mind having a go at this. I'm in Australia, weather is starting to warm up as we head towards summer.

Upping the ante will be great and where most people are at by this point.

Henri Cartier-Bresson Interview

I posted a HCB interview with Charlire Rose that has some very interesting pearls of wisdom. Rose is a little too bubble-gum but it's still a good interview. Long but worth it. There are a number of other videos with him and others on his work...just follow the links.

At this point it's about studying, shape, form, light, shadow, movement, hands, feet, expressions and how they play with one another.

To step onto the street and say "there's a woman...Bang"..."there's a man...Bang"..."there's a woman with a bag, walking dog...Bang" isn't enough to make a Street Photo. There needs to be some sort of interplay and blending of points of interest and their dynamic...bold or subtle.

HCB mentions "sensitivity" numerous times throughout the interview which really can't be taught, as he also notes. He says "sensitivity" almost dismissively as it's all there is and doesn't attribute any of his success to any skill. I'm sure many people have it to some degree and all they need to do is tune in and hunt.

Nothing's mandatory, but yes, that's the idea. An anomaly or two to break the monotony wouldn't be out of the question though...
