The Shuffle Demons .
A really fun jazz group I saw perform once in a university pub and never forgot them.
Many years later I went out for drinks with some co-workers. The lead Shuffle Demon was at the same place and happened to be a friend of my friend. We all ended up partying all night. I think we ended up in a balcony at some wierd concert hall. It's all a blur.

Immune
Nobody in the world sounds like these guys. Haunting, kind of dystopian and just brilliant.
If you're going to listen to one band from this thread, make it these guys. It won't be what you expected.Immune

baeblemusic.com (the company i work for) has some great videos of unknown bands. they let you stream full concerts of the bands for free. some recommendations are the kills, the whip, blonde redhead, the new pornographers, these new putitans, voxtrot, lykke li, and (for the hardcore) health. i may be a bit biased, but i think there's some great stuff.

This is the first EP studio recording of this band.
Number One Dad
Metroland Magazine listed "Number One Dad" as the best high school band in the capital region. In fact, they won the money they used to buy the studio time in a Battle of the Bands contest.
Full Disclosure: Ok, I'm a bit biased. My son is in the band, plays alto sax on all the songs and is the one you hear singing on "Follow Me" and "The Ballad of the Chairy Tree" (yes, Chairy, not Cherry, that's the song).
If you like the songs, you are free to download them.

Byanka
Spleen
Verka Serduchka
Chi-Li
Well, this is mainstream, but you don't know it.
Many obscure little bands and groups of all sorts that I don't have links for. Once you know the language a bit it is a goldmine. But that's my taste. :)
