Hi Jade,

Welcome to DPC!

It's easy to see why you'd be confused - neither of your 2 lenses have the Infinity symbol. A good number of lenses have a distance scale printed on them for this purpose; the infinity symbol is a figure that looks like the number eight turned sideways. Click here for an example.

Others, like yours (EF-S 18-55mm and 75-300mm), do not Ă¢€” if you donĂ¢€™t have a distance scale, set the lens to Manual Focus, and turn the focus ring to the farthest distance setting. Now back it off slightly (most lenses will focus "past" infinity to allow for expansion at different temperatures, so you need to back it off a bit). It may be easier to play with it during the day, and then mark your best point for later reference.
