Does anyone here use or is anyone planning to buy a convertible notebook/tablet?

I am in the market for one. I was ready to buy the Fujitsu lifebook 3000 (nice but no internal drive), but now the Acer 300 and Gateway 275 are out and have internal CD-RW drives.

Curious if other people have already purchased, or are investigating. We can share notes...

I started looking at these, but backed away rapidly

Market might have changed a bit, but for photoediting they ended
up looking like the worst of all worlds, at least 6 months ago.

The convertibles are just like notebooks with a screen that pivots and lies flat for a tablet form factor when you want it. The old tablets were all based on slow processors, but these are meant to be all purpose notebooks that use faster processors. They have Pentium M 1.5-1.6 GHz, which is about a 2.4-2.6 MHz P4. Two of them even have a built in DVD/CDRW drive, as I mentioned.

They do use the Intel shared graphics memory model (a negative), but I don't really think that's a problem for photo editing. I can't see one locally, so I don't know how good the screens actually are.

I hadn't really thought about using it for photoediting (I use a dual screen setup here in my home office at 2560x1024 on an effective 30"x12" LCD screen. I haven't seen a tablet like that yet ;-)

My own use: I am a home based software developer, and I would use it for business travel, but I thought it would also free me from my office more to read the internet in other locations of the house. It's not too comfortable reading on my laptop on the couch.

Regards--Neil

If you can afford stuff like that, could I have a job.. lol. I am sitting on my couch right now using my laptop. ha.

I was looking for something to use for photo workshops and the like - as well as the sitting around on the couch applications. The idea of using photoshop with a stylus on a touch screen direct on the image appealed too.
