I don't use myself in challenges (except for SP challenges, and I'm trying to find a loophole to get around that) because, well, I suck as a model. Really. I don't have any kids, so you won't see them either. Cats, yes, maybe now and again, but I think only SandyP recognizes Miss Emma. Not sure anyone would know Sir Thomas for sure. And yes, I recognize Tim's kids (but was it Aimee or Tim who shot them?), bspurgeon's gorgeous girls, and a few others' kids and SPs. I also remember a shot of Kita that wasn't taken by Judi. So vote the picture, not the person.

Sir Thomas' personality would certainly be more recognisable than his portrait...

However, as for the topic at hand... [3]... a big vote in favour of apathy on the subject from me.

some of us don't have alternative models at the ready

so i'd say [2] and [3]

unless it's a candid shot, then yes, that's dishonest because the photoog *knows" the photo is being taken

edit because 'because' doesn't have 2 s's

Seems so much a non-issue.

If you recognize someone and you feel it'll influence you, utilize the better part of discretion and don't vote that image.

Personally, it gives me a warm fuzzy to see nicely done images with people and/or subjects I recognize. I will generally spend slightly longer examining that image for its good and possibly lacking points.....and then vote the IMAGE on its merits.

The OP seems to assume that by recognizing a model I as voter will be tempted to give the photo a higher score. As someone else suggested, it probably has the opposite effect for me. It's not like I know anyone here personally (well, I've met one person), so there's little danger I'm voting for my friends!

Thank you all for your input.

I was getting confused on what to do when I saw someone famous in a challenge during voting.. and honestly, my first response is a 'wow' for them because I know their work, and almost idolize them.. and sometimes secretly try to copy that outside of challenges to learn. So my votes for such pictures are more positively biased if anything.

So last night I got thinking: what if other voters do the same? This would be like a 'group' wow and may be biasing the outcome? And suppose if a few skip that image (dont vote to be fair), it might still create a bias because some other may have positively wowed the image like I usually do.

Darn.. its all so confusing!! I think I will stick to y'all's experience..I think I will skip voting on such images to avoid any subjective bias.

Thanks for helping to channel and clear the confusion, DPC rocks;-)

ETA: Add statistics:

So I just did a quick count on the votes.

2 votes: [1] It is unethical, it can drive a biased voting (positive or negative), giving a hint about the ownership.

16 votes: [2] It is perfectly ethical, nothing wrong with it. Knowing about the author does'nt bias the voting.

10 votes: [3] I dont care (neutral).

I want to vote a 3, but your post suffers from some key technical issues. While the clarity is ok, there are some spelling artifacts that stick out and put the post off for me just a little bit. I think you could have cropped the post a little bit as well, as the framing just isn't to my liking. Perhaps, also, you could have used a more interesting and unique subject as IMO this one is a bit overused on DPC. So overall, a pretty good post, but just not up to ribbon standards, or even top 50. So I'm going to vote a 2.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I did recognise one model in Brothers Grimm... but it was a shoehorn, NOT Aimee! Then again, I didn't vote, just had a look-through at the beginning of the week.

The couple of times when I've felt the urge to adjust a score because I think I can identify the shooter (mostly it doesn't make a difference) I simply refrain from voting.

Btw, I'm one who does NOT have models. I don't shoot SP's but I have often used my daughter, Becky-Lee. I certainly don't expect any recognisibility to affect my scores either direction.

Does it seem things are straying from this? Rather, subject and title are more important than the photo itself...

I hate using myself as a model but I have no-one else, so it's either me, or no entry. If people vote in a biased manner because they can tell who the user is, well that's just pathetic.

ME TOO.

I don't think it really biases voting, I mean, I've often recognized a person's face or even style and given them an average score if that's what I really thought about the photograph. It would be one thing if everyone can see how you voted, but its anonymous, so it's not like you're worried that a friend or 'regular' will be upset you gave them a low mark.

In any case, even if it does bias voting completely, who cares, it's a necessary part of the site as some people just need to use themselves as models :P

[3] - I love looking at silverfoxx entries.

Sure there will always be a slight bias (human nature), but you don't necessarily need a self portrait to recognize who took a given picture (quite a few photographers here have style's which are pretty easy to pick up on even if they are not in the photo themselves).
