Van Halen?
That acronym story is a myth by the way. The word is a solid old anglo-saxon word that goes wayyy back... as far or further than the words in the acronym. |

Was it Van Halen? The album is For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. And I think you may be right. The other interpretation has to do with consent of a king or some such. The more colorful spelling is phuque. :-) |

This is a good question, not only because of potential "adult" language, but there have been some VERY adult conversations in these rant threads. The ideas are FAR more dangerous than isolated taboo words.
If people are mortified at the possibility that a rant might have a naughty word or two (or three or four...) then perhaps some folks should protect their kiddies by changing their preferences:

As for the rest of us, here are some words of reason on this topic from Mr. Carlin (warning:strong language):

Picked my daugher up from preschool and passed our house on the way to the grocery store. She yells out 'Damn - we just passed out house!'
She's 5 today.
Cute? Disturbing? Or should I just be proud that she knows how to use damn properly? LOL

It's not like I said "hey son come over here and read this because I don't think it has any bad words in it", I didn't know he was reading it until he saw it and asked me. He likes to goof off in the morning and will do anything to waste time while getting ready for school. Well because of this I have to stay in his room to make sure he doesn't fight, play, sleep, sit around, or anything else so I sit at his desk and get on DPC...
Like I said I don't care that people do it but I just think you went a little over board.... I understand that things make you mad and you wanted to vent but just give us me a heads up so I don't open up a thread by someone I know thinking that you would just explain your story and find myself explaining to a 7 year old what the f word means.

Just my 2 cents....The internet is full of foul things....the onus should be on the parent to supervise internet usage for kids.....I still love you Joe....; ) |

When I was raising my boys I didn't do things in their room(s) that I didn't want them to observe. Going on a child's computer, in the child's room, and going to a 'Rant' forum was quite a good decision. :-)
ETA: I hope Juliet gets her problem solved with the 'rant'ing neighbor!

Technically that part about the age 13 deal is part of the COPPA act. It prevents websites from legally collecting certain information and forming a contract with anyone under the age of 13, without parental consent. It doesn't really mean the website is 13+, just that those are the only ages that can register themselves without help.
If anyone has more correct info than that please speak up.
Back to the topic of a website allowing Nudes, suggestive titles, Rants about people being homeless tomorrow. This site has a lot a parent might not want to expose their child to and that is cool, I believe parents should have a lot more say in their child's upbringing than they do, and also the time to be parents.
However, whenever that child leaves the house, via front door, back, internet, telephone, they are going to be exiting the world the parent has set up for them. Some of which pales anything seen here by such a degree to make the 300 page rants seem like silly playfullness. So I believe it must be a parents responsibility, if they wish their child not to be exposed to such things, to take an active role when they leave the house to steer them around trouble.
Personally my parents set few rules in what I was exposed to. I still remember HBO at 7 years old and seeing boobies. I dunno how this has effected me later in life or how it yet may effect me. I'm not saying it was right or wrong, but it affects my personal view of censorship. Of all the bad things I encountered in my childhood, boobies and cuss words were so unimportant to be nonexistant.
This is a much different life nowadays, with internet and more often children having their own tv sets. I worry about kids watching the news more than cussing. The news is often biased with an intent to have an emotional impact. I don't believe kids need to be exposed to the daily worries that us adults are. Isn't that kinda the point of being adults? We deal with the problems, so hopefully they don't need to.
I can understand those who would prefer less things to shield their kids from, but I also believe adults need someplace to be adults and talk about adult things. Sometimes adults get upset, what comes out isn't always pretty in those cases.
I still do not believe that words in themselves are harmful. I don't believe kids should run around yelling fudge fudge fudge, and that is a lesson for an adult to teach them. However I do not believe such words are bad, only their use can be good or bad. Just like any form of expression.
Words and pictures can make a children story book, words and pictures can also make propaganda posters. It is all in how it is used. To drag this back on the original topic, I do not believe Juliet was directing her words at someone, or the site in general. They were not a personal or other attack. They were done in the Rant section, which I would consider the most vile and adult section on dpc ;)
She needed to vent, sometimes it isn't enough to scream at the air, and if you censor yourself while venting, then you aren't really venting at all imo.
Best advice for parents is be proactive at least when your kids are on the internet, dpc's rant section is a kid friendly place compared to some websites. If the child doesn't have the experiences and judgment to be safe in such places then the parent has to step in.
I understand a parent politely requesting that others behave more civil, but it really should never cross the point of a polite request because at the same time you are asking them to carry the weight for your child. If some or all agree to bite their tongues then great, however if they continue I don't believe it is an excuse to suggest they are uneducated or make a big deal over it, remove the kid from the pc or the room. Or third suggestion, teach them some words make some people feel sick so they should only be used in emergencies and point out people who are doing it wrong as examples. I believe almost everything when properly broken down can be a learning experience.
All that said, SC I think it is time this thread got moved to Rant, it is getting a little warm in here.
PS- Yes I know I'm a windbag, thank you.

O my. A grown man lost his cool completely to small children, while carrying a weapon. And the big emotional discussion is over the use of foul language in print.
If I had kids, & if anyone went balllistic in front of them, waving a gun & threatening to kill the faily pet...there would be, um, holy heck to pay, somewhere. And I would teach the kids to run screaming into their house anytime they see that man outside his house. I would want to put some canine excrement in a paper bag, light it on fire, put it on his front doorstep, ring the bell, & run away quick.
I personally know people who will just about have an instantaneous complete nervous breakdown if I say a bad word out loud, but euphamism words are OK. I have never figured that one out. At the same time, I love colloquial expressions like Heck, Dad-Gum, Great Balls of Fire, Holy Cow, Holy Smoke, Dad Blame It, freakin', Jimminie Christmas, jumpin' jehosephat. |

A long time ago, we had a friend, a retired military officer, who taught English at a military-type academy for boys. He was very popular and when he saw that the youngsters tossed the offending word around with great abandon as kids will, he decided to use it as part of his lesson plan.
One day they came to class and the offending word was on the blackboard, used in a sentence, as a verb, subject & predicate along with a few (offending word) modifiers tossed in. They were then asked to diagram the sentence and no doubt had to discuss the lesson afterward.
There was no mystique left in the word at the end of the lesson.
I'll leave it to the wordsmiths among us to try to duplicate a nice long sentence, but I don't know where you might post the result.
:-))
And Juliet, I hope you find a solution to that horrific neighbor soon. Meanwhile, keep yourself and your kids safe! |

I just read this thread and I may have missed a post but did the cops get called on this? Waiving a gun around is a crime of flourishing a deadly weapon. This clown needed to have charges brought upon him. |

Back to the original issue at hand here...
If someone did something like that around my kids I'd have every cop in the area there taking the @$$hole down. I'm sorry your kids had to experience something like that. |
