I just got my copy of Photoshop CS3 after using photoshop 7.0 for the last 3.5years. I can already see some differences, but i'm not sure how many more i'm missing. How much difference is there between Photoshop 7.0 and CS3? Should i immediately start editing my model photos with CS3 or should i stick with photoshop 7.0 until i learn CS3 more? Will there be a steep learning curve?

Also is there a way to carry my actions over from 7.0 to CS3?

Thank you

patch tool/healing brush is much better
B&W ajustment layer is new
edit-adjustments highlight and shadow is handy at times too.
text is handled differently, can't say it's all that different in the end, but if you open a PS7 file with text it gets converted.
Smart sharpen is new but I still use USM.
I'm sure there's tons more.

you can turn on an option that will highlight all the menu options that are new in CS3.

I made the same transition you did. Just switch over to CS3 and edit in there, is my advice. While there are differences between the two, it is mostly in features added (which you won't necessarily use, anyway).

There really isn't much of a learning curve, as all the standard functions work the same - Curves is still Curves, USM is still USM.

You can carry your actions over. You have to find the folder they are in and copy it into CS3's version of the same folder (the folder is burried somewhere in the program file - I've found it several times, but can never remember exactly where, so each time I have to hunt for it. You'll know it's the right one because it's called something like "Actions" and inside will be all the actions you see in PS 7).

Great. Because I still managed to keep both versions on my computer, i was worried that i'd have to work in photoshop 7.0 until i learned CS3. I guess I'll just hop in and start working with CS3 then.

Another question. I just realized that CS3 allows you to edit raw files. I had just started doing this in Digital Photographer Professional. Do you edit your Raw files in CS3 or still use a conversion software then edit them?

Actually, CS 3 does not allow you to edit RAW files. When you open a RAW file it opens ACR from which the converted image is loaded into CS3.

Now, you can open in CS3 as a smart object so if you need to make more RAW adjustments you can just double click the smart object and ACR will reopen for you to make your changes.

I use Bridge to sort my photos (and later rename them and add IPTC data), AdobeRAW to tone the RAW files, and Photoshop to finish my editing. All three work seamlessly together and overall I find it to be a very efficient workflow.

I HATE Canon's Digital Photographer Professional software - I think it's utter crap. Using the PSCS3 software is much, much easier, and produces faster, better results, IMO.

Lightroom FTW!

I rarely open PS CS3 now, but to compare the PS versions, they do become faster, workflow becomes better, and they have wider support for new technology, such as multi core processors.

There is one oft-overlooked, but *huge* difference between 7.0 and CS3. In 7.0, support for 16-bit workflow was spotty at best, but in CS3 pretty much all functions work with 16-bit files.

kirbic answered my question before i got to even post it. I was going to ask about editing 16 bit TIFF files, because you couldn't do that with 7.0.

I don't have ACR. Wish i did..but i don't so i have to stick with DPP.

ACR is downloadable free from Adobe.
