Here is a picture I took the other night.

If you'd like to see some more of them they are on my DA account //nomkcalb.deviantart.com/

And here is a drawing of the setup

That's awesome!
10/01/2008 08:28:01 PM · #4
so how did you not just blast the glass away with the gun?
10/01/2008 08:29:29 PM · #5
after writing the WOW post, I was wondering too. I know my gun would explode the glass and probably anything else behind it for a nine mile radius lol.

air gun?

I used a BB gun to break the glass, and I had a old pillow on the other side in case the BB actually made it through the glass.

BTW, if anyone tries this I would suggest wearing safety glasses, between the rebounds and the flying glass you get hit with a fair amount of debris.

Thanks everyone!

Very cool picture. Could be the demise of the water drop.

Somewhere in Germany, IreneM just shuddered.

That would be like trading Coors Light for Miller Light.

That was priceless!

But seriously, I'm interested in how you captured this, timing wise. Did you just get lucky? I wish you could use continuous shutter with a speedlite... I could imagine every failed shot involves a cleanup job.

Oh great!
Ammunition (sorry about that) for Irene.

Can someone from the Site Council hide this from her? Please?

Matt, very cool shots. In your diagram you draw only one flash pointed at the background? what kind of flash are you using and at what power?

Thanks

Aha! I tried a similar shot once with disastrous and painful results. In looking at your setup, I now can clearly see the flaw in the way I was doing it:

Awesome shot, btw! Would also like to hear about how you timed it...

They are BRILLIANT! As are you - wonderful work.
10/01/2008 11:11:01 PM · #18
Thanks everybody!

I just lucky with the timing, I only missed a couple of the glass. And yes, every attempt requires a fair amount of clean up, 5-10 minutes per shot.

The flash is a vivtar 285hv set at 1/16th power.

to bad there isn't a challenge that I could enter one of these into...

Thanks again!

egads you must be one lucky person. i can see myself take 100 photos before getting the timing right

Haven't you ever heard of a "shoehorn"?? :-)

"Shooting glass in my pajamas"
"Color Portrait of a broken glass"
"Abstract Fragility"
"The tale of the shattered goblet" by the Brothers Grimm" (who's gonna look it up??)

Actually I was wearing my pajamas and the time, but I figured that might be stretching it just a tad...

Heh,heh... too late! ;-) Great shots, VERY interesting. I wonder what sort of ammunition was used. I'd LOVE to try this but I don't think my husband would get over the shock of me even suggesting it ;-) I did try dropping glasses filled with liquid a couple of times - the mess was awesome...
Anyway, great work, Matt.

I'm surprised that no one has asked you this yet but what did you use as a table tp get that reflection and still capture all that liquid at the same time?
