Did anybody see the Tina Fey as Palin part II? She had an interview with Katie Couric and believe it or not, one of the jokes was an incoherent rambling answer to Katie's question which I only realized later, had the first part of it verbatim from Palin's response herself. Ouch. When the comedy team can't come up with better words than the ones you used...
Ya, so to get back to Ken's question. Do you still think Palin is "as qualified" as Obama Ken? |

Palin On Foreign Policy
McCains campaign spokesbabe Nancy Pfotenhauer called the Couric interview a set of "trapdoor" questions. Courics a real tough cookie...even tougher than Larry King.
Between the McCain Camp and Congress(both sides) shenanigans I give up. Spinning bullshit a mile high and I'm most curious if Americans are buying it. I'm never sure.

How do you reach Ma and Pa America? By *being* Ma and Pa America, apparently. |

She doesn't have to reach too far, at least.
Looking out my window going left to right, I can see a Tunisian owned Deli, an Italian Restaurant, an Afghan Kebob House, a Chinese Restaurant, a Thai Noodle Shop, a Japanese Sushi Take-Out (Korean owned) and a Puerto-Cubano Cuchifritos.
With those credentials I could at least be Secretary Of State. I'm ready. Let's Rock and Roll.

Don't sell her short. She is working on her foreign policy credentials. :P |

Do you have to get me worked up this early?
When in doubt, change focus - on anyone but the candidates. Funny how people can equate a book about black politicians to being biased on the side of Dems. Why don't they just say "She has dark skin and Obama has dark skin, so it's unfair â€Â¦"
Is this a racist assumption? - my feeling is yes.
If the moderator was a male who wrote about the success (or failures) of Geriatric politicians, I suppose I might think McCain would be favored ;)
However, I suppose this is perfect fodder for racists and Republicans. So if I was PBS, I might actually change the moderator - just so I didn't have to listen to Fox news being fair and racist about it.
I found this quote to be stupid and unfunny:
FOX News political analyst Michelle Malkin argued in a post on National Review that Ifill is "so far in the tank for the Democratic presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running."

Chris Matthews would be good or Brit Hume. Maybe both together.
...definately not Olberman or Hannity.

Man, I agree that Gwen is going to be totally biased. It's gonna be Girl Power all night long full of "you go girl!" and "mmm hmmm!" I think it's a total travesty!!!
Wasn't flash just complaining earlier it's the dems who are always bitching and playing the blame game? |

Both sides play the blame game (poorly) and if CNN had a report on a moderator who has a book coming out that is pro McCain you would certainly hear it. |

I think the sarcasm was meant to point out that:
a) everybody has a bias. News people are both intelligent and informed. How could they not have opinions?
b) the moderator plays a small role in the proceedings
c) Jim Lehrer seemed to do a fine job and I'm sure he's got his own opinions.
d) Gwen is a professional. I'm sure she could, as best as possible, put her own views aside to get the views of the VP candidates. |

But that's opinion - and I believe that opinion and bias are two different things. I hate to quote wikipedia but this is certainly the way I see it:
Bias is a term used to describe a tendency or preference towards a particular perspective, ideology or result, especially when the tendency interferes with the ability to be impartial, unprejudiced, or objective.
I just don't equate having an opinion and being intelligent and informed with being biased. I have an opinion when it comes to politics and am hardly biased. Well, if you don't trust any of them then I may be biased. Frankly, I've seen several biased people in these forums and would hardly associate them with the the words "intelligent" and "informed". :D

I think Flash was trying to counter Spazmo99's continuing "bitching and playing the blame game".
Further - Flash simply posted an article that he titled as; "Tough perception for Gwen to overcome". No position was taken by Flash on whether he agreed with the article or disagreed with the article - only that a perception problem has arisen for Gwen. When Flash was questioned on who he thought might suffice as "his version" of acceptable moderators, Flash noted Chris Matthews (who worked at one time for Tip O'Neal)and Brit Hume as his idea of "fair" moderators and further excluded personas like Olberman and Hannity as too biased. Lastly, your point D. Even if Gwen can be fair and balanced during her stint as moderator on Thursday, that does not change the Perceptionthat she will have to overcome by at least some of the viewers.

The Spaz wants to know, what's up with the third person stuff? The Spaz finds it strange and disconcerting.

Well, I do hope Flash that Gwen can do a good job. I have some faith and I suspect that Friday AM the news headlines will not be all about her (even on Fox). Lehrer was a bystander after he got things rolling. The questions were policy oriented and didn't lead or inject his own views as a framework ("Given that CEO compensation is at an all-time high, how can you defend the current bailout of wallstreet fatcats? blah blah blah" as an example of what I would mean).
Palin and Biden are going to either succeed or fail on their own merits. |

I agree. The book's timing simply makes it harder to achieve. If she (Gwen) is too easy then she risks being labeled as overcompensating. If too hard, then the risk is being biased. It is a tightrope that she shouldn't have had to walk. I certainly hope that both Biden (whom I like) and Palin (whom I share a couple core values) do well.

Katies own problems
Couric admitted the gig was tougher than she thought - and whined that CBS was stingier than her old bosses at NBC.
"I have days when I'm like, 'Oh, my God, what did I do?' " she said in a New York magazine interview last summer. She also said she felt like critics put her through a "feeding frenzy" and admitted slapping an editor repeatedly during a frustrating moment.
I thought I had remembered that Katie Couric was less than spectacular in her initial takeover of the CBS news anchor spot. Her ratings are the worst and many changes to her delivery have come over the last 2 years. She is still at the bottom of the ratings but improving. Sometimes all one needs is a bit of time to get familiar with a new enviornment.
