I started a thread a few weeks ago about 300d vs dsc-f828 //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=54239 and have some answer but you never really know something unless you experiment for yourself. Because i'm working in a store where we sell a lots of sony products, i'm one of the few lucky guy in Canada (i don't know for the usa) that had the chance to try both the Sony 828 AND the canon 300d. I was amazed about how people seemed to prefer the canon even with the impressive list of features the 828 have that the canon couldn't even compete with but now i tried. I UNDERSTAND... this is a message to all people who don't know if it's worth waiting more time to get the 300d. IT'S WORTH IT. TRY IT FOR YOURSELVES BUT MY ADVICE IS THAT IT'S WORTH IT!!!
I UNDERSTAND!!!

I like better the feeling when you hold the camera, the speed of the auto-focus, the feeling of the lens, the idea that you can change your lense, and... it was the first time i put my eyes in that kind of viewfinder wich get me to what i don't like about the 828... the electronic viewfinder i once you looked into a real slr you really going to hate these things. |

I agree with most of what you say here but I believe the 828 is going to be the top of the line consumer digital cam...

If you compare what's out of the box for the price i agree with you, but if you think about the possibility?... I don't know what to think with all the lenses you can and filter you can get just in the canon and sigma line-up. The only chance of winning this one for sony is if that 4 color filter CCD really do the miracle they're talking about... unless that, when i had the 828 in my hand at the dealer presentation they've done about a month ago here in Montreal, i didn't feel an adrenaline rush like when i tried the 300d. |

And 300D has far better DOF control and can get it much shallower with ease. I can't wait to see an affordable full frame or 1.3x sensor when it comes to that. Also you can put lenses on the 300D with more blades in the diafragm so that you get much better bokeh.
It (F828) now also is quite a bit heavier compared to the F717 so it isn't lightweight anymore compared to the 300D. In return for that extra weight you do get a much better lens (compared to the F717).

I must say that I really love my Digital Rebel. There honestly isn't one thing that I don't like about it. I even prefer how the metering of the camera works. By default the camera ensures that you will get a well rounded average exposed pic or if you want to ensure a certain subject or area of your pic is correctly exposed you simply push the AE Lock button with your right button and it uses the Partial Metering. I have been playing around with the feature quite a bit and it works very well IMO.
In manual mode the DR/300D uses Center Weighted Average Metering by default. I have played around with that too and regardless of using the Center Weighted Average Metering or the Partial Metering the exposures are probably about 98% of the time identical in both Shutter and Aperture.
Also, I love the wireless remote control. I purchased the RC-1 remote which allows for either a 2 second delay or immediate shot. I haven't tried it yet but I bet this will work awesome for Bulb exposures. According to the user manual, when the wireless RC is used in Bulb, the shutter stays open until you press the RC button a second time. I will probably play with this feature very soon.
The 300D also feels awesome with the Battery Grip attached. It really gives it a solid feel and because I have large hands it makes the camera a whole lot easier to hold on to. The battery grip has also helped me steady some of my shots using my 300mm lens. Where I was getting camera shake before I'm not getting that now. I purchased mine on ebay for $98.00 w/buy it now and would recommend it for anyone who has/or will have the DR/300D.
I think I have rambled on enough about this. Keep in mind that I don't know anything about the Sony Camera being discussed here. I'm a Canon fan way before digital anyway because my 35mm SLR is a Canon. I have seen those digital view finders though and I agree that IMO the SLR TTL view finder is much better. I said IMO. :-)
Hope everyone had a nice holiday!
