I noticed that my sensor on my Canon 30D was scratched, so I sent it in to Canon to be fixed. $300 later, I got it back. I took about two dozen pics with it and then, all of a sudden, it won't turn on. The print/share light (blue light on top left rear of camera) comes on as soon as I put in the battery, but nothing else shows any sign of life. I didn't bang it or anything. So, I'm at a loss. I suspect Canon did something to it by accident, but I doubt I'll win that argument.

Anyway, my wife is giving birth soon and I need a camera. So this is a good excuse to by that 50D that I would like (if it comes out in time). I see that it is generally listed for $1,399 on most sites I look at, but Broadway Photo lists it for $200 less. Question: Are they legitimate?

Since you want it shipped to an odd part of the world, I suggest going with B&H. I've had one shipped to Kuwait and it got there faster than had I shipped it to Germany.... The $200 diff ain't worth the headaches. :-)

And congrats!!

I have only heard horror storiesregarding bait and switch tactics, and charging extra money for those items that originally came from the factory with the camera (i.e. battery, charger, cables.)

Broadway Photo (and all their other names) has a rating of 1.18 out of 10 on Resellerratings.com DON'T waste your time with them.

I use BeachCamera.com myself. They're trustworthy and based in NJ. I have a 50D on pre-order with them; they'll ship it as soon as they get it from Canon. Their prices are the same as everywhere else, shipping is free (unless you upgrade to a faster method) and they won't screw you over.

Thank you all. That's great to know. I suspected as much and won't use them.

Deb: I'm actually in Boston for the next two weeks. Kim is due to give birth in two days. So I've got to do something about my broken camera quick. Unfortunately, the 50D won't be out in time...

Ah! Well then, go shopping and get a P&S until you can get the 50D. Believe it or not, I didn't go handle one (a 50D) while at Photokina - the crowds were simply too massive to get to that counter, then I forgot about it later in the day. Oh, and send the 30D back to Canon - let them know something with the repair didn't work quite right. They'll probably fix it for you.

Keep your eyes open at any camera shops in Boston... The Canon 50D should be out no later than Oct. 6th per Adorama. The originally were told they would have it by Sept 25th, but that did not happen. As soon as it does come out you could run into a shop and buy one of them and avoid the wait for shipping. I myself ordered from Adorama, and wil be having it shipped 2-Day for an additional charge.
Oh, and make the baby wait. Buy mom a BIG cork. :P

Otter, I have a 350D body that works and I can lend you if you like.

Perhaps you can rent a body until yours is fixed or you have time to make a more informed decision.

Thanks Pineapple. That's awfully generous of you. I couldn't ask you to mail me a camera from Brooklyn, though. I'm not even sure it would arrive on time because they are inducing labor (or maybe going c-section) tomorrow. In the meantime, I have found a solution. I'm going to look into whether rentals are possible. If not, I do have my old G-6. So it's not like I'm in danger of having no pictures. I just wanted them to be as good as possible. There is a bright side to all of this, too. Kim was going to make me wait until next summer to get a 50D. She, too, wants the best pics of the baby we can get. So, I think she's going to let me go ahead and grab one as soon as it comes out. It might be too late for the day of birth, but it should be soon. And, like I said, I've got the G-6 in the meantime.

Thanks everybody!

I remember taking a camera to a concert once and having the feeling that the photography had interfered with the musical experience.

I can't see how important pictures of newborns are. To send to friends and family, sure, but to parents? You get a whole damned life dumped in your lap - a couple of little snaps as keepsakes and the rest is confetti.

I guess I'm swearing in church here.

Do not allow taking pictures to interfere with the experience of the birth of your child.

Use your old p&s or borrow one or something...

And best wishes to all concerned. Congratulations.

I tend to disagree with you or at least maybe thinking on a different plane than you are. I think having the camera there immediately after is such a blessing. I have sort of been able to experience it myself (my daughter is my step-daughter), they were not able to take pictures of her when she was first born (and due to the fact that her mom almost died during the birth she wasn't able to see her for days) they don't have any record of her at that sweet young age. So I've sort of missed out on that special moment. I don't think anyone likes the pictures immediately after the birth but there soon after is so special. (btw, my profile picture is of a friends child like 1 1/2 hours after he was born).

Tip:

If there's a chance you'll be holding your wife's hand during birth, take any rings off beforehand. It can be pretty painful if she gets a squeeze going on your fingers.

If you have any hockey gear, wear it for some extra protection. Even the gentlest wives sometimes like to share the pain.

Good luck!

And also remember that they may bring up thing from the past that you have done wrong, and sometimes from WAY back. So while it is a wonderful event(that should be recorded) it can also be stressful and embarrassing depending on what they bring up! And yes sometimes the most important hockey equipment to be remember is the cup(not Lord Stanley's either).

Hey, absolutely. But sometimes even a mobile phone camera is enough (my granddaughter, now 6 months).

Well, I've got my old G-6; so that's what it's going to have to be. Judging from Ken's cell-phone pic of Riley, it should be good enough.

Thanks for the advice on the hockey gear and esp the cup!

At least the birthing practices of the Huichol (of Mexico) have failed to gain a large foothold here. It may be too late, but based on my experience, you may want to consider a fluid-resistant model like an Olympus stylus.

"Huichol Indians are descendants of the Aztecs, and live in the mountains of North Central Mexico. During traditional childbirth, the father sits above his labouring wife on the roof of their hut. Ropes are tied around his testicles and his wife holds onto the other ends. Each time she feels a painful contraction, she tugs on the ropes so that her husband will share some of the pain of their child's entrance into the world."

Yes! Perhaps this is the answer to teen pregnancy! Find the father at birth time. *grin* In fact, if there's any doubt at all about paternity, round 'em all up "just in case". *grin again*

Any news for us on the birth yet?

We're leaving for the hospital in an hour. The baby is breached. They will attempt to turn her in-utero. If they succeed, they'll immediately induce labor. If they fail, they'll go with a C-section.

Good luck! And here's hoping there are no ropes in the immediate area. Let us know how it goes!

Our first baby was frank breach. C-section for me. Twenty years later, he's even more adorable than he was then.

It's not the delivery method that's important, remember... it's that they're here safely.

I'm praying for a safe delivery.
