I hate bees, so the yellowjackets freak me out. I downloaded the drive by truckers, but did not listen yet, and I have not listened to much Disturbed, but I love Chevelle.

Some of my favorite rock bands are:
Reliant K
Weezer
Cold Play
B-52's
The Kooks
The Fray
Jimmy Eat World
Foo Fighters
Kelly Clarkson
Chevelle
Tesla
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Alkaline Trio
The Goo Goo Dolls
My Chemical Romance
Plain White T's
Rooney
The Smashing Pumpkins
The Black Keys
Trapt
30 Seconds to Mars
Boston
The Cranberries
Dashboard Confessional
Hawthorne Heights
Hole
Nirvana
Motley Crue
Panic at the Disco (Joey Lawrence shot them the lucky bastard)
Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Sara Bareilles
Sheryl Crow
The Spill Canvas
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Stone Temple Pilots
U2
Veruca Salt

Blues:
BB King
Budddy Guy
Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown
Elmore James Jr.
John Lee Hooker
Kenny Wayne Shepard

Jazz:
Christian Scott

Just to name a few in my Zune right now.

A bit of "Spock's Beard" should satisfy... acid jazz and rock mixed up with all sorts of other stuff... just ask Melethia and she'll tell you all about them!

How 'bout some Don Cherry, Michael Brecker, or Chet Baker for jazz trumpeters? All are great, Cherry is out there but very cool - he played with Ornette Coleman doing the free jazz thing. Baker is outstanding.

My favorite all time for jazz is Charles Mingus - fantastic writer, lyrical and avant garde, and a kick butt bass player...check him out!

Sonny Landreth - he's somewhat obscure, but plays a mix of rock/blues/jazz sort of music. Very New Orleans themed. His album "Levee Town" is probably best to start with. He's a bit hard to find, although Half.com & Amazon.com should have him.

Try Slacker Radio, you pick one band and it plays 20 different bands that sound like them. Its pretty similar to pandora, but I like this better.

I just picked up Chet Baker and Sonny Landreth. I am going to listen tomorrow on the way to work. You can never have enough tunes.

For guitar and trumpet together, try this little known gem: Red Reflections by Dmitri Matheny

Also, I'm reminded of "Invention For Guitar And Trumpet" by Stan Kenton (on New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm)

You and I need to talk, 'bone. Love Don Cherry -- in fact you reminded me of a Cherry record I need to revisit (Where is Brooklyn?).

Michael Brecker was a sax player, but I think his brother Randy plays trumpet.

Mingus -- hell, where does one start?! Maybe with Ah Um or Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus. The latter features some great trumpet work.

Considered one of his more ambitious works, this is still a personal favorite: Let My Children Hear Music

Yeah - I meant Randy Brecker- sorry bout the bad info....

I actually played with Don Cherry back in the early 90s - a cool guy, but he was having trouble playing much by then and only used the pocket trumpet on occasion - he was doing the Mulki Kulki thing then.

Mingus - I agree on Ah Um is a great starter...but my favorite of his tunes is the awesome "The Shoes of the Fisherman's Wife are some Jive Ass Slippers", and you can't beat the title!

IF you really want to go out there...Try some Sun Ra. I got a chance to play with him as well...the man from Saturn himself. His band could swing harder than just about anyone's, but man did he take some of his stuff out...I even got to dress in "spacewear" to play with him. Far out stuff!

Too cool! You've been around. Sun Ra was a genius. Space is the Place is of course incredible, but for a real surpirse, check him out on solo piano or leading vocal groups -- I think people were quick to dismiss him because of the whole spaceman persona. One-off stuff like this is the real testament to his genius.

"Shoes" also opens Let My Children Hear Music. It's a great tune. The relatively new Cornell disk is a must have -- if only to hear Eric Dolphy in one of his final recordings.

I'll check in later. I could talk about this stuff all night!
