Granted I have only had my SLR for a week... (and I got the 28-105mm Canon general purpose lens instead of the kit one), I was already making a wishlist of lens additions for next year (hoping there will be a tax refund:-).

Anyways, so usually I go about reading lens reviews on various famous websites, and on DPC forums. But then I realised I could go see the lens's page here on DPC, and it gives me some interesting stats. Example:

You can see how frequently a lens wins a ribbon. I did this test where I would select the recommended macro lenses for a Canon rebel, and count how many ribbons each lens had fetched in the first row of high scorers. So that helped me shape the wish list for a macro (this is just my list based upon budget estimates etc.):

First: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras. Won a ribbon for 9/9 images in the first row on its page. Amazon lowest price: about USD 499. Example:

Second: Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Medium Telephoto Macro Lens for Canon SLR Cameras. Won a ribbon for 8/9 images in the first row on its page. Amazon lowest price: about USD 414. Example:

Third: Canon EF 180mm f3.5L Macro USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras. Won a ribbon for 9/9 images in the first row on its page. Amazon lowest price: about USD 1284. Example:

:-)

Prash, I often go visit the image pages for lenses I own and its a great place to visit if your after a new lens. However, its more likely the person behind the lens that makes it work so well :)

A year or so ago a goal of mine was to get an image from each of my lenses in the top 30 but sadly today I'd have to sell half of my lenses to achieve this so this year my challenge was to take a picture with each of them lol.

And, talking about goals Prash, you have lots, why not add "get my average above 5 by year end"? You know you can do it ;)

Thanks for the good advice. Sure the person behind the lens would make most of the image, and thats why I am not getting any right now. In fact my hidden goal is to make an average of 6 with the current lens before I go out buy one from my wish list (now you know it!!:-). And who knows I may just do that this season? ;-)

Lol Prash, its not hidden now! and, tbh I think you have set your sights too high (though thats not always a bad thing). With just 7 challenges under your belt your average will change in big swings and (of course) the more challenges you enter the smaller the swing. As you enter more challenges you may move away from wanting to please the 'voters' and prefer to please yourself ;)

Good luck ;)

I agree. Prash is really doing amazing things for just starting out here. He gets my vote too for the "most active new user" award if we make one. :)

Thank you (( ahem.. coughing to sound humble ))!

Seriously though, DPC has sparked new interests in me. It gives a bright colorful portal into life that I was missing. And I have a lotttt to learn. Everyday I find another amazing example that gives me a reason to be here one more day.:-)
