Can someone tell me what kind of file this is?

It's a sidecar file that contains edits you make to RAW images.

As L2 said it's a side car file that Lightroom (perhaps other programs as well) keeps a list of "edits" to your original file. This is what Adobe calls "non-destructive" editing. You always maintain your original file as it was straight off the memory card. They are typically small and if you are using Lightroom will be in the same folder as your photos.

yes other programs as well. I have Elements and it uses the same file. It saves it right alongside the original NEF file. I have noticed on Elements, if I make edits to the RAW file it automatically saves this xmp. If I want to start over from scratch I have to delete this xmp file otherwise when I open the NEF file it opens to the saved xmp.

Convert all images to .dng. Then you won't need the .xmp file.
