Does anyone here use a remote offline backup service to backup the contents of their PC's? It never used to be an issue, but as I'm getting more into DP (RAW files, oh my!), I find I'm filling up fast.
I do back up to another PC, which will protect me against a hard drive failure. But if (God forbid) the place burns down...
I remember the days when I backed up to a couple of floppy disks. Ha!
Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

All of my images are backed up to //www.smugmug.com. Everything else is backed up to //www.carbonite.com/.

I've used a few of them over the past years. I've had a 1 year subscription to both Carbonite and Mozy.
Mozy's concept is great, and their software design has lots of features (including keeping multiple versions for you, as I recall) but I found the software to be buggy.
Carbonite's software is the simplest, fewer features than Mozy, but not buggy. One limit as I recall is that you can't backup network drives.
Both are inexpensive for unlimited backup (especially if you get a 1 year subscription).
When I switched to the Mac last November, I was out of options for online backup. But I'm pretty fed up with the Mac, and I'll be switching back to a PC soon. |

A good friend of mine in Maryland has a new startup called MyDropBin. Its a front end for Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3). I've found S3 to be reliable and cost effective but have had issues with finding a simple interface. This may be an option for you.

The only issue I have had with Mozy is that the auto backup loses the plot sometimes and thinks the web is not connected.... not too bad but could be far better. Restores are easy enough with multi versions. The will NOT do network drops on the personal version (need the pro where they charge you by Gb).... but a firewire or USB drive can be seen :-)
There is a new one called dropbox (well, it's been in beta for a bit but now openly available) which is interesting (on my list to try out)... not a backup as such but a sync between multi machines.

Smugmug even uses Amazon's S3 service, and has a deal with Amazon to upload RAW files if you are a Smugmug Pro user, don't know about other user levels. |
