Strange, the barrel price dropped below 100 for a moment today. A whopping one third lower than a couple of weeks ago. Must be a local thing.

BTW, I pay 8,89 dollar a gallon at the moment.
Good thing that my car is as fuel efficient as a Prius.

Yep, that's about the right price in most western European countries.

Transit systems does not run in the route to take my wife to work and back or even close.
We drive bare minimum. I took my son to school this morning, wife to work, filled up with gas, and came home. Car has not be driven since and will not be till I have to pick my son up from school and my wife from work.
And before you say bus for my son. He is in a special class because he as "Asperger's Syndrome" and bus is not an option in our case.

Your doubling your gas costs - have your wife drop your son off and keep the car all day. Or is there another way to get your son to school? School bus, walking, bicycle? Can your wife carpool? Get a different job, closer to home or ona bus route? Get a scooter or motorcycle?

It seems easy and obvious to me, but it's not always so when it's YOU.

I know I'm doubling my gas, if she could drop off my son that would be great but we would have no way to get him home from school. To far and to busy of roads for him to walk and with his Asperger Syndrome he can't. His syndrome also keeps him from being able to ride to school via the bus system.
The only way my wife could use our transit system would be to get up at 4:00am and then walk two miles to the nearest stop and then ride the route to the station. Then Walk another 2+ miles to work. Work 9 1/2 hours. Then walk 2+ miles back to the station, ride the route to the nearest stop and walk another 2 miles. She would get home about 7:30 PM. I don't think that would work and I would not ask her to do that. Plus she would have to pay $1.50 each way, thats $14.50 /wk.
Getting a job closer to home, ha! In this town that is easier said than done :) She works at one of the largest financial institutions here...nothing closer to home would pay near what she makes now and her benefits and seniority.

Not so simple. Sometimes living in a mid-size city is worse than living in a large city. We have roughly 300K people here with an expected 30K more military arriving soon. Our town was not build to suit the growth in population. Even though my wife only works about 6 miles from home it takes 30 minutes commute there and another 30 minutes back on average because of traffic.

If she works 6 miles from home, get a bicycle, change clothes at work.

I only wish I had a 6 mi commute, mine's 40 each way. It'll still take 30 minutes, but it's good exercise and doesn't burn any gas.

I wish Ford would bring their 65mpg car to the states.

Is that the Ka? I heard it wouldn't pass our safety laws.

I wish my Prius got 65 mpg! I think the car manufacturers are going to have to start producing/selling efficient models here (US) to survive.

I thought I heard on the news a while ago that Ford was going to introduce several of their European models to the North American market.

Again easier said than done in this city. We have no bike lanes. Against the law to ride on the sidewalks and the 6 miles is on 4 to 6 lane limited access roads with speed limits of 35 to 45 mph. If she took the scenic route it would be more like 10 to 12 miles and would have to cross those lanes at least twice each way. I'm not making excuses here but it is not safe here using a bike as transportation tool. At least on the roads I'm talking about.

Also, if there's no shower at the other end, then, well, you get the picture.

Here we have about $3.47 with Credit Card and $3.37 with cash
09/12/2008 09:30:49 PM · #42
Is has now went as high as $4.29 here. A few stations still have it at $3.99. So as of now (and we know it's going up more) it ranges from $3.99 to $4.29 /gallon here.

wasn't crude down under 100 today
09/12/2008 09:47:28 PM · #44
I filled up this afternoon because of this thread (thanks btw), and it was $3.75. This is California where it's usually more expensive too. I asked the owner of the 76 station what the prediction was and he said he hadn't heard anything yet, but that could change quickly.

Yes it was down but the the gulf coast oil refineries are off-line at the moment due to Ike. And estimated to be off-line up to 2 weeks. If that happens we will have to free up some of the oil reserves.

I think this is what I read earlier today.

On top of the 20 cents yesterday, it has gone up another 40 cents since this morning. That's 60 cents in two days. Even if it hit $5.00 a gallon, I can make it. But there are plenty of others who are not so fortunate. What are they going to do? All to line the pockets of greedy fat cats.

This is a rural area. Nothing is close by. Many people travel 20 miles just to get groceries. There is no money or job for them to move.

If the rigs were damaged, if the refineries were damaged, that would be one thing. 25% of our refining capacity is in hurricane country. Whose bright idea was that? As a nation we have not planned well for a very strategic resource.

ahhhhhhhh

Stink (my eldest son at UND) bought a bike today........he drives an alero t hat gets about 30 but the bike is a good idea........

I on the other hand can not drive our Polarias Ranger into town 17 miles away MN has laws against that..silliness I tell ya! If it was winter and a snowmo I could!

Still $3.68 around here, but then again there's been no crazy rumour about prices going up $1 to spark panic buying. It's probably due to slightly reduced supply from the gulf states due to Ike, and IMO it'll recover to "normal" again in a few days...

I have an excel spreadsheet that I keep my gas log in. So I know what I have paid for gas each time I fill up. All are from the cheapest priced stations within resonable distance.

Here is the gas price history from July till today from my excel log.

07/07/08 $3.999
07/14/08 $4.039
07/23/08 $3.999
07/29/08 $3.869
08/03/08 $3.669
08/09/08 $3.569
08/15/08 $3.459
08/28/08 $3.549
09/10/08 $3.599
09/12/08 $3.669
Prices now $3.999 - $4.299

Prices should not change this much this quick. I can remember when we would go a year or more and prices would only fluctuate 10 cents +/-.
