DPC scores are a game. If you want to score highly in a sport, or move up the professional ladder, or succeed according to commonly-accepted definitions in anything, you learn how to play. Not just the rules, but both offensive and defensive strategies. In DPC terms, that means doing things like having good focus and composition, and staying away from radical imagery.
If you don't care, shoot whatever floats your boat! Just don't then assume the majority of voters are idiots or "don't get it" or whatever. You're choosing to swim against the tide, but that doesn't make the tide wrong in some objective way. And it doesn't mean the people who like your shot are "nice" while the others are "mean."
I'd bet most art ,of any type, is only loved by a small percentage of the public overall. So it's not like DPC is unusual.
For me, sometimes I shoot stuff I know DPC will like (gelatin glasses), and sometimes I have an idea I just want to share. For the latter images, I enter for the comments (and faves if any come). But I always shoot stuff I like (yes, it's okay to like both the same stuff DPC tends to prefer and more artsy stuff). And sometimes, oh, those magic sometimes, the artsy stuff aligns with what DPC likes.
Just be happy that out of 300+ abstract entries, there are very few "typical" DPC shots. |
Well hey. I agree in a way, but then again this site is not just supposed to be about sport. It's about learning and growing and for some, appreciating the art of others. And I don't think I called the commenters "mean" or idiots for that matter and if I did I shouldn't have. I did call the one "nice" but I meant that more as referencing which commenter I was referring from before as opposed to saying they are "nice" because they liked my shot. I would love someone to challenge my shot and give me something constructive, something I cannot see with my own eyes like focus. Like for example, I'm not even sure if by the most strict definition my shot is even abstract. But no one has commented on that. |
I just reviewed some of your work in your portfolio, you have some great compositions. I wouldnt comment on other aspects that your comments touched, but I feel a bit discouraged to see the need for more constructive comments from someone who has been here for a while, it is quite disappointing I admit. |
I don't really understand? It doesn't matter how long you've done something, or how good you are. There should ALWAYS be the need for constructive feed back. Unless I'm misreading what you are saying? I don't know. |

I haven't gotten to commenting on as many as I would've liked to yet. Really behind..
You have commented on 43 images (14%) in this challenge.
Will also get to the shots I promised to comment on :)

I think I am at a loss of words trying to describe my intentions, sorry about that.
What I meant to say is this: I am a newbie here. And it is disappointing on DPC's part to see that you have been here for sometime, and after all this time you still feel the need for better comments...meaning things didnt improve... and I am sure you must have tried.
Anyways, Now I think the most practical solution is to ask for comments in a separate thread after each challenge is over.

My average has taken a hefty drop in the past coupla hours, only 3 new votes and a big drop, seems a few folk passed by my photo and slammed mercilessly on that 1 button. Darn.

Ah I get it now! Yes, it does get frustrating. I did that sometimes, and posted in the reaction club which was great. The 30 day challenges can be really great too if you have a good group that's really dedicated to it. But it's always hard to keep people motivated. |

That seems to be a trend. Mine dropped by .14 with 3 votes. We can hope that they're hitting everyone the same so their votes are thrown out at rollover.
In the purple challenge my score jumped .15 at rollover.

Yep. 4 votes, avg. 2.75. Dropped me from 5.67 to 5.57. The absolute score doesn't bother me at all. In fact, it's just fine given the difficult challenge. But I really want to break my longterm average so I can stay in the side tournament. Ah, well, still lots more voting to come (I hope!).
And WOW. A 0.15 jump at rollover is about 3 times as much as the most I've ever seen.

My score experienced the same .1 drop at about the same time as the others mentioned above. That's why I came over to check this thread.
It started with a 6.0000 at 10 votes, then slid steadily to 5.3 at 100 votes. It climbed it's way back up to 5.6, then slid again, and was holding steady around 5.3. Then in the blink of an eye (one click of the update button) it was at 5.2.

Its not funny any more. The last 3 votes seem to have dropped the avg from 4.44 to 4.31 for me too :-) |

Yep, I agree. The only way to "Succeed" here is to photography water drops or turned pages of a book.
If you would like to expand your photographic horizon from there, you have to move on! ;-) |

I DO HOPE you DO NOT leave DPC, as you are an amazing photographer, with so much talent, style, grace, and awesome compositions. A real feeling in your images, and I am proud to add you to 'my favorites'. Just visit Monica's portfolio, escapetooz and see the amazing images she has to share with us.

I think there probably is defining abstract. Many shots in the challenge do not fit the strict definition of abstract art or are toeing the line (probably mine as well) but I could still see why they would submit, other shots are not abstract in any definition of the word. I'm having a hard time voting on this one. I feel like there might be those that thing of abstract in the general terms as opposed to the artistic definition.
General terms from the dictionary for "Abstract":
1. thought of apart from concrete realities, specific objects, or actual instances: an abstract idea.
2. expressing a quality or characteristic apart from any specific object or instance, as justice, poverty, and speed.
4. difficult to understand; abstruse: abstract speculations.
5. Fine Arts.
a. of or pertaining to the formal aspect of art, emphasizing lines, colors, generalized or geometrical
forms, etc., esp. with reference to their relationship to one another.
b. (often initial capital letter) pertaining to the nonrepresentational art styles of the 20th century.
Now abstract art:
"abstract art"
A trend in painting and sculpture in the twentieth century. Abstract art seeks to break away from traditional representation of physical objects. It explores the relationships of forms and colors, whereas more traditional art represents the world in recognizable images.
By those definitions, for me, I don't think that the photo necessarily has to have no recognizable objects, but just that it has more emphasis on the shapes created by them than the object itself. |

I usually don't say much about this..even if I can low scores..
But it is times like this that I miss the compulsary comments if you give a score 3 and below ( or was it 2 and below?)

What compulsory comments? It was an additional popup that happened the first time you hit the 3 but it was just an extra click to move on without commenting.
Anyway this is a scores thread. Discussion of what is or is not abstract has been going on in two other threads.

This is a wild one for sure. Scores going up and down with big flucuations at this point only means there are about an equal amount of viewers sitting on both sides of the line, is it abstract or not. Some photos dare the viewers to see things they haven't before. I appreciate that. Others are abstract for both camps, some for both and then not enough for most. With this challenge I have no idea if technicals come first or is it abstract enough? or not.
And I still don't get the recognizable chatter bit of it all. I know what the objects are in more than 90% of the photos. No one said this had to be a macro challenge. Don't want to come across as whining, I know everyone has their own interpretation. Just speaking my mind.

I know it can be bloody hard getting through the week watching a shot you really like being pounded. Sit tight. You'll feel better a week after voting's over and look at your shot again, and you'll probably understand why it placed the way it did, if it still doesn't make sense move on, it'll remain a fave for you and a select other people who you admire who make it even more worth it. I feel that way with a shot I really loved when posting but later on agreed it didn't fit the topic. There are those low scoring shots I still personally like more than shots that scored 1.5x better. That's the toughest part of the DPL or side challenges where you need to post each week. Posting shots you're not proud of and don't do well, and then just let it slide. We get over it :) |
