Nice job! I saw that Dawn got one for her doors entry as well. Not a bad week for the Jokers, and I believe that's 4 posthomous awards for the team during the games.

We have not heard from Kari. Jack is shipping out next week (stay safe!). Everyone else is in so far based on the Flickr thread.

Not next week, but within the month and I won't be back until late November. I'll take the camera with me and hopefully get some nice shots while I am out. I'll just be too busy to compete this time. I'm stationed on a carrier so I am hoping to get some nice shots of take-offs and landings. I am still trying to figure out how to compensate for the vibrations (which are pretty extreme) and still keep enough light on the sensors. My 100mm might do pretty good. It can do f/2.0 and it is fairly fast. I am also hoping to make it to the San Diego Zoo this trip. I am thinking of making a folder in my portfolio for at sea shots. That way I can share what I shoot while I am gone. I have a U3 capable thumb drive, so I am going to install PSE on it so I can do PP. U3 is such a beautiful thing! ;o)

And don't worry... I always play safe.

I'm more than willing if that's the way they work out the teams again. Like always, it seems there is quite a bit of debate about how every little detail should be planned and executed. :-)

What is U3?

So, basically, even with a tripod, your camera is vibrating. Sounds like you will need a fast lens and plenty of light like you said! I wonder if weighting the camera and tripod down would help. Maybe a carbon fiber tripod as the carbon layers dampen vibration. My only experience with carbon products was in cycling, I have never used the tripod.

Hehe... try to envision this. Close to 100,000 tons of metal floating on the water and getting struck (landing) by a chunk of metal weighing almost 40,000lbs and traveling at 300 knots. It um, shimmies a bit. ;o) On take-off you are accelerating that same 40,000 pound chunk of metal from 0-300 knots in a couple hundred feet of runway. The raw torque required to catapult also creates a bit of shaking. Even after nine years, the awesome amount of kenetic energy we wield during launch and recovery of aircraft astounds me. It actually feels like a respectable sized earthquake.

U3 technology is kind of like a mini-OS for your thumbdrive. It enables you to install and run programs from your thumb drive. It comes in pretty handy for me on the ship, since I am not allowed to add any unapproved software to our computers. I just load the application I need on the drive and run it from there. Here's a linky. I have the 4GB cruzer, but I am going to be getting the 8 or 16 gig before my long trip next year. I need to be able to fit PSE, all my Canon software, and some space for photo storage all onto one. I love my U3! A little forewarning about it... since it is like a mini-OS, most anti-virus will sound off the first time it sees it. Because of that there are a bunch of false statements out on the web that they are loaded with spyware... totally not true. Some very reputable testing companies have gone through and verified there is nothing harmful in the U3 software. On the first use, it will try to install it's software on your computer but it's not neccesary. I have it loaded on my home computer, but use it at the office without any noticable difference in performance from not having it loaded on my workstation. You should check it out... you won't be sorry.

Maybe you should try a motion dampener of some kind - a "bean bag" filled with the tiny Styrofoam dots? With that much motion of everything, it is going to be tough - like you said. Another thought would be to anchor the camera to the ship - at least the camera and ship would be moving together - then you'd only have to worry about the 40,000 lb chunk of metal moving...

Does not sound easy!

umm Jack, are you trying to shoot the planes at night or something? I know that would be cool, but... early morning and magic hour should be ok at 2.8 / 250 or so. play with that, but I dont think were looking at 1/60th and F11 here. Although a higher aperture would be nice. Can you use a gorilla pod and mount... wait that wont work. Ok vibration reduction footing. Ill look it up.

ETA: you can also try this:
try the old trick of adding a little weight to the tripod center. A sandbag hung on a cord from the center column works well, but in your case might have to be hung from the top of the legs connection and hang alongside the column. A little extra weight below the camera often stablizes things nicely.

ETAA: So here it is. Higher ISO <1200 is best practice. Faster shutter, HEAVY tripod with a weighted center. They make wooden tripods that at like 12-15 pounds that should work well. A gyroscopic thingy - tripod mount. They are really expensive from what ive read. Lastly, ask your fleet photog what they use. They should be able to help a bit as well.

best quote "So you need help with your sea legs, huh?"

Don't forget to post your intent to participate tonight after rollover. You will nee to name the country, and I would suggest stating that you want to remain with the Jokers. I get the sense that the teams will be organized on a first come first served basis, but I will try to keep us together. He made a specific point that he does not want captains posting a team right after rollover. He wants to give everyone a shot at getting on a team. So post as soon as possible after rollover.

What if you want to participate (and stay on the Jokers), but you're on the East Coast? I guarantee I have no intention of staying up past midnight to post. If someone West Coast wants to quote this and post for me, that'd be great.
