There are too many definitions for abstract floating around. Me personally, I considered abstract to be something interesting to look at but not recognizable, at least from the definitions I read. It makes it hard to score because according to me, so many would fall into the dnmc category. Beautiful pictures but a lot seem to be black and white but not so much abstract. Before I actually start voting, someone want to tell me if my way of thinking is way off??

If it's 100% definitely without a doubt the same picture then yes I believe it does as the rules state:

You may not:
* use the same original image in more than one challenge.

If you are sure then I would say report it I guess.

I compared the two images. They are NOT exactly the same. And seems they are also from different authors. But the setup is exactly the same :-)

Tricky eh? If that is allowed one might as well copy some past winner's style and setup and contest in another one.

What do you guys think of that? :-)

So someone's trying to mimic someone else's shot. So what. Maybe they're trying to learn something. This is a learning site, right?

Learning is one thing. But using what you learnt from others in a contest is another. It is just my opinion though, I am not trying to generalize it and I dont expect you to agree with it. In any case, I will value such a picture low on originality.

How many photographic images are really original anyway? Come on, this is a learning site and entering challenges with images people have just learned how to photograph is what this site is all about. There are no riches to be won here. It is about photography. Yes, creativity has its place and those entries that are 'original' and new will likely score better. But for those of us who have been around here for a year or two or five, there really isn't that much that is unique and new. Maybe refleshing and interesting, but new...probably not.

I am new to this site, and all my discussions here are an attempt to learn too. It is just hard for me to understand how an exact same composition can be termed different based upon slightly different lighting conditions or some other factors. But may be that is how it goes... I personally value originality very high. And I think I have a right to believe so.

Nope because that definition will cause you to vote mine well. :)

Well, I liked all the work, but I liked some more than the others. It is very hard to understand the abstraction.. including in my work. Some of them are phenomenal!!

I agree that recreating a shot you like in your own way is all part of learning, what annoys me though is people who almost identically imitate someone else's work and call it a 'tribute'. Stealing someone's idea and calling it a tribute to them does not make the theft Ok in my book.

I don't quite understand your scale then. The scale on voting says good (10) and bad (1). By that approach, most of the images you have voted on were more bad than good...

I liked a few very very very much, and others not quite as much. Sorry thats how it is. I am not sure one can question a voter on their style, it is very subjective, no? And then my votes are only a fraction of the large pool.

I just remind myself that we are here to learn... I am quite happy with the votes I am getting, and they are quite low as well.

You have given an average score of 5.5647.

I don't understand my average given score, as I gave plenty of 7s and a huge handful of 8s. My score is at:

Steadily dropping.

You give a couple of low scores (1s through 3s and the average drops quite a bit)

I don't get it. I'm happy with my score of course, but I see some excellent images out there, and hardly anyone is reporting higher than a six.

But guys do scores really matter a lot here? All of us are learning from each other.. and after all, judging an art is such a subjective skill. I would say all of us did great. We expressed something abstract in our own ways. Be happy:-)

Your average vote cast is a 3.3 mate, I know what I call that... You claimed, and I quote "Guys, I am done voting on all the images. Some great work out there! I already have 2 new favorites from this pool.
"

Say no more squire. However, I am pleased you are happy.

Nope you made a funny! And yeah with a 3.3 voting average I can see how scores are not that important to you.

Oh I don't really care about the score all that much, but it is fun to score well, I'm mostly frustrated that I entered a shot that I don't even like.

I'm mostly frustrated that I entered a shot that I really liked, worked hard on getting the lighting how I wanted it and no-one else likes it lol - Dropped .12 in the last 9 votes and gone from 5.02 to 4.88 those scores are like DNMC scores bl**dy voters ;)
