The shot is worth more than that. And I know this sounds like a frustrated response, but I'm a good photographer and to be honest .... the 640 rule doesn't do my shot justice.

so... we'll see how it goes from here.

That is what happened me in the mathematics shot. I spent alot of time and effort and it is not even above a 6. This one seems to be going the same route. :(

when i entered my photo, i truthfully and honestly asked myself what i would give my photo if it wasn't mine. i told myself 8. i asked two other people what they would sincerly give my photo if it wasn't mine, they both said 8. then why do i have a 5.4? i feel i have let myself down somehow

Personally I find the basic editing challenges harder because you have everyone who can participate. That just makes it easier for people to bring others down to bring their scores up. I also think that it doesnt help seeing so many pictures that are similar.

A small focus group is no guarantee of market success. ;-)

DPC Voters are not your friends? ;oP

Mine's in the tank as well. It's where I thought it would be based on what I know about DPC voting.

Its a shame that beautiful shots of flowers are too boring to warrant a good score. There is more to photography than elaborate setups and flashy gimmicks. We seem to lose track of the simple natural beauty around us. Its really a shame.

There are pictures of flowers and there are creative pictures of flowers. The creative and/or well executed ones will score well.

I try (and I stress) try not to look and worry about my scores, for me it's about getting better, if I can post a better score then my previous challenge (even if it 0.001 to the plus) then that's a bonus. From what i can tell there are 150-200 votes per open challenge, everyone see's the photo in a different way. Look at the ones that ribbon, even they get 1's and 2's :)

I love just entering the challenges and seeing what people think, Comments are a positive, even when they are negative, 1 negative comment is better then no comments.

Just my 2 cents :)

At the risk of being unpopular (gasp), let me say - we all know that the majority of the voters do not meditate over our beautiful photos. We all know what the dimensions of the image will be in basic editing. We all (sort of) know what is popular here and what is not. And yet, it always comes as a surprise when there are no comments, our gorgeous photo is scoring sub-average and it's beauty is not done justice with the eensy dimensions in which we have to post it.

And me, I am routinely astonished by the people complaining about these above mentioned things. So I guess I fit right in. :op

My point - and I have one - figure out why you participate in challenges and adjust your photos accordingly. Is it to learn, is it for the strokes to the ego, is it for the virtual ribbon, is it to develop your style? Per the concept of always looking on the bright side - if you and your friends like the photo, it's a good photo! Some of the most stunning photos and talented photographers have medium to low marks here. Are they deterred? Hardly. We are all talented in our own way - this site is just one small standard of measuring one way of looking at photography. Don't let it get you down.

OMG - I ranted.

I am inclined to agree with you whole-heartedly, and said much of the same earlier in the thread (just phrased so that it was about myself).

Way to go Alicia! Very eloquently put.

This what I was aluding to with my comments, A score of 4.2 with 0 comments in 40+ votes means to me that certain traditional subjects are just too boring for people to bother with. It would be nice if they were commented then at least its a technical issue, but looking back through old challenges of this type I see a lot of traditional photo styles that do very poorly realative to the quality of the image.

i don't think there's anything wrong with liking what many others do not. it makes you different or special imo. it might be a disadvantage here but not a bad thing at all.

btw thanks for the comment on my entry.

I looked at the questionable ones again on 2 different monitors, some are very light purple and some look a shade of pink lol.

I almost went back to bed thinking I needed more sleep.

My entry looks very purple on both my monitors at home (which are calibrated). However, it looks very magenta on the monitor at work (which is not).

Scary.

mine is calibrated (supposedly anyways) but I am also using my husbands computer monitor to help me out in this one. I would hate to give a point or twto lower because it doesn't look purple to me

anyways i am trying to leave comments on all entries and i mean TRYING - its so hard

Good post!

That was no rant Alicia. I read that as a very good assessment of what is going on here. I continue to be astonished though about certain things around here but I will learn and accept them as everyone has in the past.

Yes indeed it certainly seems to be in this challenge. Or many are using uncalibrated monitors, could this be the reason?

I experienced something while photographing my Purple shot. I had 2 different purples in one setup but when I viewed the pics one had turned to blue. I even called my son to ask him what he was seeing only to confirm what I saw. When I adjusted the lighting, it would turn back to purple and the other colour would shift to blue. Weird. I finally used only one purple colour. :|
