This story, coming from Boston.com, has some cool images of the Large Hadron Collider.

thanks for the link david! that thing has been anticipated greatly for quite a while now. i've been intrigued with it ever since i read, reread and still don't understand Brian Greene's "Fabric of the Cosmos" - the most awe-inspiring book ever, imo.
supposedly it may produce miniature black holes as a product of it's high energy collisions. That would be something! |

Oh, to be given access to that place with a wide angle lens. |

Very cool pictures. I can't remenber what book I read that used CERN and the LHC in the story. It must have been one of the Dan Brown books. Cool link thanks for posting it. |

I have trouble with a 500 piece puzzle, I can not imagine what kind of time and effort went into designing and putting that thing together. Very cool images! |

Enjoy it whilst you can, when it creates an uncontrollable black-hole that finds itself some matter to feed upon the earth will be sucked into it in roughly, what, a millionth of a second.
Seriously, some scientists don't want it switched on..
In the event it doesn't kill us but just rips a hole into another dimension, then I already have my crowbar handy for the outpouring of inter-dimensional creatures. right Half-Life fans?

The website was down for awhile, but it's back: LHC Countdown (currently 5 days, 6 hours 47 minutes)

A parent's worst nightmare: something like that as this year's must-have toy... in a very large box with "Some assembly required" stenciled on the outside. :-O |

Would take longer than a millionth of a second. I'm not too worried about black holes. It would take 1000 tones of iron crushed into a thimble to create a very tiny black hole. I don't think that landscape project in Europe will be able to achieve that.
But.... were they to succeed the resulting object would be so heavy that nothing could contain it. It would sink to the center of the earth.... but keep on going until it reached the far side of the earth the exact distance from the core as the starting point. It would "orbit" inside the earth like this for millions of years until it gobbled it up! |

I thought I read somewhere that what this thing is going to do happens every day in our upper atmosphere. The only difference is that we are going to do it in a controlled environment for recording and study. |

I liked this quote:
"There is a chance that firebreathing dragons will be produced by the LHC. But the probability of this event is so small, one can show that it will not happen in the lifetime of the universe."
Yeah, but somebody does win the lottery every now and again.
The Bush cronies showed "Mission Accomplished" too.
Rats. Now I've got to sharpen me broadswoard. My horse hates wearing his armor too. Oh, well. On the bright side, I've got a shot for the Horses challenge. |

I think it's far more likely we'll see this headline...
"Vandals break into LHC, steal 270,000 miles of copper wiring"
;) |

I think the facts showed that the "Mission Accomplished" sign was put up by the "Ship's" crew on their own.

That is Ultra-Coolio. It reminds me of some of the Quake III maps I used to spend hours killing people in.
