External hard drive and copy a tonne of stuff off to free up some space.

OR

Burn some DVDs and remove from the hard drive to free up space.

OR

Compress the hard drive

Did you delete programs you do not use anymore? Boot into Safe Mode (F8) and do a Disk Defrag too. Also go to your Windows Explorer, Temp Internet Files and manually delete them all from there. Past that you will have to get an external drive to move files to so you can clear up some space! Consider installing a 2nd hard drive for storage/installs as well.

I would try the compress option first.

If your drive is as full as you say you may not be able to burn any DVDs as there won't be enough space to build the burn object.

Even though you're compressing files this is only a temporary solution so once you've freed up enough space, burn some dvds and clean up the drive.

First Thing I'd do is a "Disk Cleanup"

Click "My Computer" when it opens Right Click on the C: drive choose Properties.
On the First Tab you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup" click it.
It will go off and find a bunch of Temp files and garbage that is no longer needed.
It will come back with a bunch of boxes checked. Clicking ok will delete those not needed temp files.

That one is totally safe...

Now if you are 100% sure your computer is functioning properly (drivers, no virus etc) you can free up some diskspace in a hurry by deleting all but the last restore point. Restore points by default can take up 12-15% of the size of your hard disk. If you have never purged those then they are gobbling some disk.

My $.02-worth of advice is to buy the biggest HD your computer system can handle & ask the shop to transfer your files to the new HD for you.

It's not as expensive as you think. And it's your photography, right?

Yup... you should have seen a little bar (thermometer) go across the screen while it did it.

How is you machine running? No issues, all drivers right, no viruses etc? Is there any reason you think you would have to use a restore point to go back to a later date in time? Reason I ask is you can free up some space in a hurry if you purge all but the last restore point. But that would mean that if something broke tomorrow you would only be able to go back one day. Restore points by default will take 15% of the total size of your hard disk.

320GB external harddrive --> $70 with free shipping

08/11/2008 01:36:44 AM · #25
An external hard desk is a must these days, simple USB one would do the trick, I've just purchased a 500GB from Future Shop for 99$. Removed everything that I need to back up to it, some stuff that I rarely use or not on my daily use list. The most important stuff, I kept a copy of them on the external one and burned them on DVD's as well.

After that I went through all my programs, removed the programs that I didn't use in the past 60 days. I am done :)

I am not sure about compressing the drive, especially if it is the C drive, some programs can't function, installed on compressed drives, you wont know exactly till you do it then you are stuck :) try to uncompress it again .. guess what .. there is no enough space.
just my 2 cents.
