This might be a dumb question, if so I apologize in advance :-), but anyway is there a limit to the amount of photos you can put in your portfolio, I have noticed that some people have quite a few and last night when I was trying to upload a photo I received a message saying that it would put me over my allocated space allowed or something along those lines, but I know there are people who have far more photos in there portfolio than I do, do you just use smaller sized photos or how do you avoid this problem?

Sorry if this has been adressed before and I missed it, Thanks in advance for your help.

You are limited to 10MB. You can normally choose a compression ratio when saving your images a higher compression ratio will produce smaller files but will impact the quality of the shot.

Correct... 10mb is the limit, but challenge entries are not included in this limit. I currently have about 130 non challenge photos in my portfolio and I'm using a little less than 1/2 of my 10mb. Most of my images are between 50-70k each. I choose to make them 580 pixels on the long side and then find an appropriate compression level that does not degrade the image noticeably.

What about print versions of the shots? Are they counted against the 10MB?

If you use PhotoShop, when SAVE-AS photos put jpeg quality at 4 or 5 ,this way you will preserve image quality and they will be 20-50 KB size and this way you can put up to 300 photos !(AS I did) ;-)

Whoa, 4 or 5 in PS is a mighty high JPEG compression level. It will produce artifacts. I try not to use less than 7 in PSe. The less compression the better quality. Nothing worse than JPEG blotches in your photos and entries. Well, I guess I won't go that far...

If you can't get it to the KB size you want with 7, try reducing it some. Busy photos, like landscapes without clear blue skies don't compress as well as those with large simple areas.

I did not know that the challenge entries were not inlcuded in this 10mb, either that or I forgot reading it :)

Rules at a Glance
The following is a quick view of the challenge rules. These may be overriden if specified in the 'extra rules' section of the challenge.

File Format: JPEG (.jpg)
File Size: 150 kb or less.
Dimension: No dimension may be shorter than 160 pixels or longer than 640 pixels.
Exposure Date: Your photograph must be taken within the submission dates for the challenge.
No spot editing allowed.

So we are not misunderstood, just for clarification:

Challenge entries are not included in the 10mb limit
but have a 150k file size limit.

Not true ,if the original photo is good,4 or 5 is plenty of quality for the web!

Both of these images are compression 5 !

Thanks Pitsaman, I always automatically saved them at the highest quality not realizing the difference it made.

Now I have a second question:

Since I am now running out of room..do I have to delete them and start all over again and resave them, will I then lose all comments on them or people who had selected them as favorites? I'm just not sure now how to go about fixing this without destroying my entire portfolio.

Well at that small size (640x480 or less), I agree it's harder to see; and I don't have your originals to compare, which would help me spot them. The effect changes by the photo; your landscape is complex, and at that size, it's hard to see blotches; However, I'm not so sure the continuous tones of your cherries or tomatoes aren't affected, particularly in the darker regions in the center (back).

I sure wouldn't want someone to have that as a rule who doesn't know what to look for. In the latest challenge I saw and commented on signficant quantization errors in 3 or 4 photos so far.

Try a landscape with rich textures of sky and clouds at those settings.

At 12 is about 400 KB.LOL lot of colors there!

More colors involved the larger the file!

Although a nice pic, I find the jpeg artifacts on your tomatos shot fairly distracting. I'd be very surprised if these colour issues appear on the original:

As that pic was only 26K a little more quality would still have resulted in a relatively small file and a great shot.
