| I want to know about your experience of using this diopter filter with canon lens. I am currently having Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS & Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. Can I used 500D with them? Will you suggest me for going to it considering budget limitation for a dedicated macro lens? |

Not sure what a 500D is, if you mean your 400D then I can suggest a very nice Macro for a good budget price.. in UK this lens sels for £245 but in USA you can get it way cheaper. Sigma 70mm Macro f2.8 I had a play with one and thought it was a brilliant lens for the price. Sigma also do a 105 Macro that is nice and I have heard wonderful things about the Tamron 90mm Macro although I have never tried it myself.

HAHAHA OK, WOW silly me thought it was a follow up for the 450D already.. well... OK I have used these kind of macro filters before and to be honest I was not so impressed with them. I found them to be too OOF around the edge, almost like a lens baby effect. You can get them in many sizes so my guess is that you can get one to fit your lens but I woul much rather go with a REAL macro instead if the budget will allow. Happy shopping.

The performance of the Canon 250D and 500D is superior to most other "diopters." That's because they use a two-element design. They *are* quite heavy, though, especially in larger sizes. The 500D is meant for longer focal length lenses in the 70mm to 300mm range, and the 250D is meant for lenses in the 30mm to 135mm range.
The range of focus distances available really is pretty narrow. |

Diopter lenses are fun to use and certainly extend close up reach.
I am sure the canon versions will be good.
This foto was made using my scratchy 30 year old +2 from the Vivitar close-up lens sets (+1, +2, +4 diopter)

I've not used a 500D with an 18-55, but have had quite good results on a 70-200. As Kirbic says, the range of focus distances available is, indeed, pretty narrow. Also, as Kirbic pointed out, I would imagine that the 250D would be better with your lens. The 500D basically causes the lens to be focussed at about 500mm when the lens is set to infinity focus, whereas the 250D causes the lens to focus at about 250mm when set to infinity. Using a shorter lens, I would therefore suggest that closer focussing might be of more use.

hi nilesh ..
thanx for the pm ..
Hi Roz,
I read in forum that you tried closeup filter before buying macro lens 100mm/2.8.
I am also thinking for the same as I asked in forum //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=803268. Can you guide me for going the closeup filters of canon 500D/250D for the lens Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS.
Thanking in advance :)
Regards,
Nilesh.
i've read what everyone else has said ..
unfortunately i cant advise you on the 500D/250D filters or the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS ..
BUT .. there are some things i can say ..
firstly you'd have to decide how close-up you want to go and i'm guessing you want a good result .. ie clear and sharp ...
i did try the hoya filters with my tamron 18-200 but the result was not good when compared to the canon 100mm, not clear and sharp, and you cant get nearly as 'close' ..
my only experience with a true macro lens is the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro .. for close up and macro work it is one of the best around .. i believe the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM for Canon is comparable .. check out silverscreen's work ...
considering the results and the versatility you'd get with either the canon 100mm or the sigma 105mm i imagine you'd be very happy .. you can save a lot of money too if you shop around ..
i was able to get my canon 100mm and filters for the following price .. that's australian $'s ..
1 x HOYA 58mm CP (Circ. Polarizer) Filter $44.00
1 x HOYA 58mm HMC UV Filter $22.00
1 x EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro AF $699.00
i absolutely love my canon 100mm ..
check out owen's 'precision landing' .. as you can see you're not confined to a macro shot .. !!
if someone was asking me which macro lens to buy i would recommend the canon 100mm because i've been very happy with it, but i would advise them to consider what they want the lens for ..
do you want to be able to see the hairs on a fly for example ?? .. if you do, then go for the canon 100mm or the sigma 105mm ..
but dont just take my word for it .. get a few opinions .. there might be something out there, that i dont know about, that could suit you better ..
i'm sure there are other ppl in dpc who have much more knowledge and experience than i have with different lenses and prices .. but i hope i have been of some help .. :)
edit to say .. any of the macro shots you see in my portfolio were taken with the canon 100mm without any extension tubes or 'boost' of any kind ..

I used a diopter lens for that. Not the 500d but a +5 Hoya 2-element multi-coated HMC placed on a Minolta DiMAGE 7i.
I would only buy a diopter lens if I had a point and shoot though. |

| Oh... and don't expect the 500d to preform on the Canon EF-S 18-55mm - it is intended for longer focal lengths. The 250D is intended for 50-135mm lengths. It too is a +4 diopter. |
